elected president of the Pinehurst
Chamber of Commerce, along
with other officers of the organi
zation.
At the meeting held last week,
members reelected Albert S.
Tufts vice-president, Mrs. Vivien
B. McKenzie, secretary, and B
U. Richardson, treasurer.
New members elected to the
board of directors were Herbert
Ehrhardt, Jr., and Nelson C
Hyde. Reelected were L. B
Creath, Jr. and B. U. Richardson
Other board meipbers whose
terms have not expired yet are

The North Carolina Merit Sys
tem Council has announced June
23, 1956, as the date on which
examinations will be given for
professional positions with the
State Commission for the Blind.
Applications will
through June 13.
Written examinations wiU be
given for the following positions:
social case workers I and II (open
only to blind persons with social
work training), rehabilitation
counselors I and II, physical res-
jtoration nurse, and social work
supervisor I. Rehabilitation coun
selor I is open to college gradu
ates.
Persons interested in any of
these positions may write to the
Merit System Office, Mansion
Park Building, Raleigh. Applica
tions may also be secured from
any local health, welfare, or em-
ployment service office. The ex
aminations will be held in Ra
leigh only.
Of all the retail goods sold each
year, 70 per cent are made up of
items coming from the soil.
SUMMER GOLF
The famed No. 2 golf course at
Pinehurst will remain open this
summer, according to officials at
the course.
The other three courses in Pme-
hurst will be closed.
In Southern Pines ’ the Pine
Needles Country Club and the
Southern Pines Country Club will
remain open, but Mid-Pines is
closed until October.
According to reports on farm

More fatal traffic accidents oc
curred on Saturday than on any
other day of the week during
1955, the State Department of
Motor Vehicles reports. Official
records reveal that 248 death
dealing accidents occurred on
Saturday with Sunday in second
place with 208. One hundred and
three death crashes occurred on
Monday, 93 on Tuesday, 101 on
Wednesday, 110 on Thursday, and
167 on Friday. The 1031 fatal ac
cidents during the year led to
funerals for 1165 persons, 238 of
whom were pedestrians.
