North Carolina THURSDAY.- MAY 31. 1956 Cline Leads Blue Knights In Batting With .477 Average Bobby Cline, along with the rest of the honors he has won at Southern Pines High School dur ing the past four years, added an other to his string this week: final season averages for the baseball team show the popular third base- man led the team in hitting with a solid .477. Cline also shared runner-up honors with Johnny Watkins in the runs-batted-in column with 17, one short of Lynn van Ben- schoten. Averages for other leading hit ters were: Lynn van Benschoten, .394, Watkins, .382, Hill Boswell, a promising starter for next year .364, Billy. Hamel, .353, Billy Cos, .293, and John van Benschoten, .278. Cox had 16 RBI’s, and was fol lowed by John van Benschoten and Hamel with 13, and Boswell with eight. Watkins was the leading pitch er, with a 6-1 record. Watkins al so led the pitching department in strikeouts with 66. Following him were John van Benschoten with a 3-1 record and 28 strikeouts, Dickie Mclnnis, 2-0, 16 strikeouts, and Steve Smith, 1-0, 11 strikeouts. The team fielding average was 896 and the batting average was 301. The Blue Knights, eliminated in the county conference by Aber deen, had a 14-2 record for the season, which included two for feits from Cameron. Prim Will Attend Red Cross Aquatic School In Brevard James W. Prim, HI, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Prim, Jr., of Southern Pines, has just been awarded an all-expense scholar ship to the Red Cross Aquatic School to be held in Brevard June 6-16, according to an an nouncement today by Mrs. Au drey K. Kennedy, executive sec retary of the Moore County chap ter. Georgia Ann Blue, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Blue of Aber deen, also was awarded a scholar ship to the school. Camp Carolina, the Red Cross training area, is designed to pro vide adequate instructors for the water safety services as well as first aid. “I cannot lay too much stress on the importance of prop er training in water safety,” said Dr. J. C. Grier, Jr., Pinehurst, who is chairman of the local Red ross safety services "committee: It is vitally necessary that the Red Cross have instructors who will serve the county in this phase of our work.” Additional scholarships will be available for training periods later in the summer and all ap plications should be forwarded to Dr. Grier as early as possible Each person who attends the school on a scholarship is expect ed to teach at least two classes of swimmers during the remainder of the summer. The Red Cross office in South em Pines is cointipiling the list of persons desiring water safety in structions and all applications should be made there immediate ly. Police Honored At Spaghetti Dinner Members of the Southern Pines Police Department and their wives were honored with a spa ghetti dinner by Dante Monte- santi, owner of Dante’s Italian Restaurant, last Friday evening.
