year graduate from 16 courses of
instruction at the school as avia
tion pilots and maintenance per
sonnel.
Axmy PFC Peter Stuart, 18,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles G.
Stuart, Route 1, Cameron, recent
ly completed a 16-day series of
field training tests with the 10th
Infantry Division in Germany.
The annual tests included
squad, platoon and company com
bat tactics and methods of indiv
idual survival under simulated
combat conditions.
Stuart, a gunner in Company
M of the division’s 87th Regi
ment, entered the Army in Jan
uary, 1955, and received basic
training at Fort Riley, Kan. He
arrived in Europe last September.
Stuart attended Cameron High
School.
Army Specialist Third Class
Joseph W. Smith, son of Mrs. J.
A. Smith, Southern Pines, re
cently completed four weeks of
field training exercises in South
ern Gremany.
Held jointly by units of the
11th Airborne Division and 10th
Special Forces Group Airborne,
the exercises opened with a para
chute jump and emphasized night
movements.
Specialist Smith, a senior scout
observer in 3rd Battalion Head
quarters Company of the divi
sion’s 188th Infantry Regiment,
entered the Army in July, 1954,
and received basic training at
Fort Jackson, S. C. He arrived
overseas last March.
Smith is a 1954 graduate of
Southern Pines High School.
Miss Lu^ Howard
Dies Following
Extended Illness
Miss Lula Howard died last
Thursday at her home on Route
1, Robbins after an extended ill
ness.
She was a native of Moore
County, the daughter of the late
Jim and Hattie Councilman How
ard.
Funeral services were held
Saturday at 2:30 p. m. at the
Prosperity Friends Church with
the Rev. Lenard Von Cannon of
ficiating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Surviving are three sisters and
two brothers.
Mosaic is the oldest known to
bacco disease.
Services For Mrs.
Rosa Patterson
Held Last Friday
Mrs. Rosa Patterson, 81, of near
Vass died last Thursday morning
in Saint Joseph Hospital. She was
the widow of J. M. Patterson.
She is survived by five daugh
ters, Mrs. Mary Key of Route 3,
Hillsboro; Mrs. Pearl Key of Car
thage, Route 2, Mrs. Lucy Park
er and Mrs. Ollie Sellers, both of
Carthage, Route 3, and Mrs. Bes
sie Allen of Vass; seven sons,
Oral Patterson of Virginia Beach,
Va., Brady of Petersburg, Va.,
Floyd of Cameron, Route 2, Lacy
of Sanford, Gilford of Cameron,
Route 1, Leonard of Carthage,
Route 2 and Dock Patterson of
Sanford; two sisters, Mrs. J. C
.Stanley of Manly and Mrs. Lucy
Mosley of Surry County; sever^
grandchildren and great-grand
children.
Funeral services were held Fri
day afternoon at 3 o’clock at the
Lamm’s Grove Church. Burial
was in the church cemetery.
