CAROLINA
Held over through this Thurs
day, Friday and Saturday, with a
Saturday matinee at 3:00, at the
Carolina Theatre, is the C. V.
Whitney masterpiece in Vista-
Vision and Technicolor, “The
Searchers,” starring John Wayne,
Vera Miles with Jeffrey Hunter,
Ward Bond and Natalie Wood.
Adapted from the Saturday
Evening Post story, it is both
great and strong with the firm
ness of stance and directness of
point that makes great pictures
great.
The photography is tremen
dously effective in capturing, in
the splendid dimensions of Vista
Vision, the magnificent Monu
ment Valley terrain that figured
so momentously in the Ford Pro
duction of “Stagecoach” in the
same region.

duction since “Quo Vadis!” Pan
dro Berman’s “Bhowani Junc
tion,” based on the best-seller by
John Masters and lensed in Cine
mascope and Color, in its native
locale in India. It is exciting,
thrilling, topical film fare at its
best.
Starring Ava Gardner and
Stewart Granger, with Bill Trav
ers, Abraham Sofaer, Francis
Matthews and many others, it
opens on a vast canyas of color
ful scenics and busy physical ac
tion, with appropriate native
music, and this sets the mood for
the immense panoramic picture
the story paints of modern India’s
sociological and political changes.
Besides the regular cast such
huge crowds appear on the screen
(with the cooperation of the Pak'
istan Government, which provi
ded officers and men of the 13th
Battalion Frontier Force Rifles,
units of the Punjab police and fa
cilities of the Northwestern Rail
way), that the spectator will get
the impression that the cameras
are literally encompassing all of
India’s teeming millions.
With an its giant proportions,
the intimate love story of the
beautiful half-caste girl with her
emotional conflicts, is so weU and
tenderly told, that it wins au
dience sympathy.
Ava Gardner is magnificent as
that girl. Her beauty and other
physical attributes, added to her
splendid handling of the part,
leave a memorable impression.
With quiet dignity that is most
effective, Stewart Granger
handles the role of the British
colonel in love with her.
British actor Bill Travers makes
his first appearance in an Amer
ican made film in the role of a
half-caste with the same social
problems as Miss Gardner.
A vivid love story oni a back
ground of turmoil and revolt. . .

in America today and it is the
wide appeal of a story of such a
man that prompted Mr. Zanuck
to pay a fabulous price for the
book when it was first published.
It has been on the best-seller
list ever since and has received
both critical and popular acclaim.
In translating the story to the
screen Mr. Zanuck used every re
source of the Twentieth Century-
Fox production organization to
capture the emotional impact of
Tom Rath’s struggle with his con
science, his exploits in the war,
and his efforts to rise in the busi
ness world.
Gregory Peck plays the role of

As a paratrooper he killed seven

er disturbed his life with Betsy
and made them question whether
their life has been really what
they wanted.
