PAGE “B’ THE PILOT—Southern Pines. North Carolina THURSDAY, JULY 5. 1956 ‘Rolling’ Charges Preferred Against Two Ft. Bragg Men Two Fort Bragg soldiers waiv ed preliminary hearing and have been bound over to the August term of Superior Court on charges of “rolling” a fellow sol dier near Carthage Saturday night. The two were identified as George R. Brown, 20, and James E. McFeeters, 20, both of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. Their victim was identified as Keith W. Christensen, also of the 82nd, who brought the charges. The “rolling," which can best he described in layman’s language as an attempt to take a drunk man’s “roll” of money while he is unaware of what’s going on, al legedly took place between Car thage and Vass near midnight Saturday. Christensen said he had'been in Fayetteville earlier in the evening and the two soldiers stopped and offered him a ride. Their destina tion Christensen said, was sup posed to have been Charlotte. They went to Vass, where Mc Feeters stopped and picked up his car, according to the statements, and then headed for Carthage. About half way between the two towns, Christensen became ill and asked to get out of the car Brown was driving. He said he was “very drunk”. Christensen said that sometime after he got out of the car the two soldiers took $66 and a wrist watch from him. They carried him to Carthage where, Christen sen told police, he came to and demanded his money and watch back. The two soldiers gave both !to him, he said, after which he (Christensen) held them and call ed police. . . Doth soldiers admitted their in tentions of “rolling” Christensen and were placed in the Moore County jail for the night. Chris tensen was jailed on a public drunk charge. The next morning he swore out warrants charging the two with the robbery which, since the watch was valued at $40, auto matically constitutes a felony. A lieutenant from Fort Bragg visited them Sunday and told of ficers neither had ever been in trouble before and had exception al records in the service. Both waived preliminary hear ings and were released on $500 bonds.
