Chamber Office
Plans Two Week
Closing Monday
The Southern Pines Chamber of
Commerce office will be closed for
two weeks starting Monday, while
the office manager, Mrs. Bannie
Fobes, takes her vacation.
The auto license bureau will al
so be closed during this time and
Mrs. Fobes was asked by the di
rectors in regular session Tuesday
night to so notify all auto dealers
of the area.
The Tuesday night meeting was
the last which will be held until
the fourth Tuesday in August, as
the' summer schedule of meetings
is now going into effect. This calls
for one meeting a month instead
of two. The directors decided that
these should be on fourth Tues
days, with called meetings in be
tween if something comes up re
quiring immediate action. The
summer schedule will continue
through September.
A renewed effort to.secure full
or contributing memberships from
auto dealers of the area will be
made in the next few weeks, the
directors decided. Only one out-
of-town auto dealer maintains a
membership. However, since the
auto license bureau is of direct
economic benefit to many dealers,
saving them much time, annoy
ance and inconvenience, it was
felt appropriate to ask them to
help with expenses.
The bureau is not yet self-sus
taining in view of the fact that ex
tra full-time help must be em
ployed during the winter rush
season.

it renders fully justifies its con
tinuation by the Chamber, as a
majority of license buyers are
from out of town, coming into
Southern Pines literally by the
thousands from neighboring coun
ties and even more distant places.
Plans were made for Chamber
assistance in the convention of the
North Carolina Association of As
sistant and Deputy Superior Court
Clerks, to be held at the South
land Hotel for four days starting
August 2. W. B. Holliday, wel
fare chairman, who is in charge
of this assistance, said he had ap
pointed Mrs. B. M. Harrington to
secure bingo prizes. Local mer
chants will be asked to cooperate
in the donation of several prizes
to enliven the bingo game plan-

Retired Dentist,
Died Here Tuesday
Dr. James. Joseph Spring, who
as a young lieutenant in World
War 1 did all the Navy’s prosthet
ic work, died suddenly Tuesday
afternoon at his home here.
A requiem mass wiU be sung at
St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at
10 a.m. Saturday. Burial with full
military honors will be at Arling
ton National Cemetery at 1 p.m.
Monday.

day at 7:30 p.m. at the Powell
Funeral ChapeL
He was bom at Fitchburg, Mass.
He practiced dentistry at Fitch
burg until enlistment in the Navy
in World War 1.
Retiring as a dentist in 1934, he
moved at that time to Southern
Pines where he had resided since.
Surviving are his wife, the for
mer Ruth Maney of Fitchburg;
two daughters, Mrs. Lynn McKin
ney of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mrs.
Robert N. Page III of Aberdeen;
three sons, James J., Jr., of Hous
ton, Tex.; Robert P. of Philadel
phia and John R. of Gary, Ind.;
seven grandchildren; and one sis
ter, Elizabeth, of the home.
