1^3 Page FOURTEEN THE PILOT By DAVE WAGENVOORD GOLF NEWS AND COMMENTS At Southern Pines Country Club days are over. Last week he was challenged and beaten by a local player in a two-hole match. What hurt George’s pride was the fact that his opponent played the two holes entirely on his knees. Best Ball Jack and Joe Carter teamed up in a'best ball match with Carlos ■Fry and O. T. Parks and fired nine 3’s and finished the round with a very fine 65. Parks, who, incidentally, is one of the clubs most gracious losers, had the fol lowing to say regarding the fu ture of his game .“WJien more strokes are given, you can be sure I’ll get them.” Tycoon Damon Able, the “weighted head cover magnet,” recently ar rived at the course with a small boy and a rubber life raft with the obvious intention of corner ing the water soake^, used golf ball market by paddling around the water holes and retrieving poorly hit balls. Broad A theoretical study of fore knowledge was published this week, in the quarterly Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, by W. E. Cox, Jr., of Southern Pines. Entitled “Precognition: An An alysis,” it represents an effort, extending over several years, to determine some of the lesser- known characteristics of man’s occasional experiences in super- normally glimpsing or dreaming of future happenings. The paper is in two sections, the first of which was published in April. Several spontaneous ex periences are given, including one contributed by Mr. Wade Ste- vick of Southern Pines. Cox said that in the section just published’, detailed evidence is shown which suggests the exis tence of an unconscious but semi- continuous application of precog nition in daily life. He bases this on findings gathered from a rela tive passenger-population study involving railroad accidents in the United States and Canada during 1950-54. Cox added that this is the first time that “sub liminal precognition,” as he calls it, has been statistically indicated through field data. Cox, long a student of psychi cal research, is an associate of the A. S. P. R., and also is ac tive in th work of the Parapsy chology Laboratory at Duke Uni versity. ^ Power Failure Is Caused By Gusty Winds HereSunday A power failure that lasted in one section of Southern Pines for almost two hours Sunday night was caused by gusty winds that tangeld a power line with a guy wire, it was reported Monday by Carolina Power and Light Com pany officials. Ward Hill, who is division manager of the power company, said an interruption came in the Lakeview, Vass, Cameron and Southern Pines area at 7:20 Sun day night. Considerable search, he said, finally pinpointed the trouble at a location near the Fairway Motor Court. Relocation of some lines in that area had become necessary, he said, when the new bypass was cut through. He said a primary line had been wrapped around a span guy wire by the wind. Such a thing is rare, he pointed out, and not something that emergency crews usually look for when a power failure is noted. After the trouble was found and that part of the line closed off, a switch got out of alignment, causing further delay in power restoration. Hill said that full power was back on shortly after 9 p. m. ' VaSs Officer Is ‘Most Northern’ In US Air Force The Air Force has announced that Robert D.
