Representative — Telephone Vass ilTl WSCS Meets Mrs. Edgar Mashbum was host ess in absentia to the July meeting of the Methodist Women’s Socie ty of Christian Service, with Mrs. Redga Thomas and Mrs. Cortis Thomas pinchhitting in the mat ter of serving refreshments. The meeting was held in the fellow ship hall of the church. Mrs. Redga Thomas, the pres ident, gave the opening medita tion and conducted the business session. “Scatter the Seed in Brazil was the topic of devotions led by Mrs.' C. P. McMillan, and the theme of the program of which Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Sr., was leader. Mrs. Edwards gave the introduction and a prayer, fol lowed by experiences in planting seeds of goodwill, love and Chris tian brotherhood in^prarious mis sion fields, given by Mrs. A. G Edwards, Jr., Mrs. C. L. Tyson Miss Bessie Cameron^ and Mrs. S. R. Smith. Mrs. H. A Borst closed the program with prayer after which refreshments were served. New Minister Preaches The Rev. C. A. Trivette, new pastor of the Vass Presbyterian Church, fiUed his re^lar ap pointment Sunday morning with a large congregation present to hear and greet him. He was ac companied by his wife and teen age daughter, Myrtle Jane. They are living in the manse at Cam eron. Lights Out The Rev. and Mrs. Jim Esk ridge, accompanied by her moth er, Mrs. McCormack, who had ar rived Saturday from Mississippi drove down from Durham Sun day evening for Mr. Eskridge to conduct the evening worship ser vice at the Vass Methodist Church, which was to be featured by a film on Korea. After members of the congre gation left home and about the time for the services to begin, the electric current went off. They waited for a while, then, as a storm seemed to be coming up, went home. It was learned later that the lights were off' not only in Vass, but also in Aberdeen and South ern Pines, but due to the usual on-the-job-ness of the CP&L people, service here was restored about 9 p. m. Vacationing Vacation time is here and local people are making their way to the beaches and mountains for a few days of relaxation. Four families left Sunday eve ning for a week’s stay at Ocean Drive, where they had procured a big house for the week. In the group are Mr. and Mrs. Cortis Thomas, Dana, Jim Ed and Ann Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Ed wards, Jr., Ann and Al, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Mullinix, Jeanette and Jimmy, and Mr. and Mrs. W J Morgan and sons, David and Bruce. The Morgan baby is spending the week with her grandmother at Ansonville. Some of the men are remaining throughout the week, others came home for a part of the time and will go back this weekend. They will return late Sunday evening. Bill McKenzie of Pine- hurst is working in the bank dur ing Mr. Morgan’s absence. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Gladstone returned Sunday night from a trip to Georgia that included vis its to Forsyth, Macon and Atlan ta. They were away more than a week. Mr. and Mrs. Edison Callahan and children and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Callahan are back from a trip to Ocean Drive, S. C., and Lake Waccamaw. Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Crissman, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. A. B. At kins, Jr, the latter couple from Cameron, returned Sunday from a Florida vacation They spent some time in Miami, and on the way home stopped in GreenviUe, S. C., to visit Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Atkins. Mr. and Mrs. James Key and daughter, Betty, and Mrs. I. J. Key took a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains last week. Also visiting the Great Smokies were Mr. and Mrs. Pete Mastourn and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Mashburn and son, Jimmy. Back Fromi Canada Mr. and Mrs. Harold Williams and son, Danny, and J. W. Hen nings have returned from a vaca tion trip on which they saw m^y interesting places. They visited Mr and Mrs. Irvin Kiser and family in Flint, Mich., and went to Canada to visit relatives. A Son Mr. and Mrs. Russell Spicer (Janet Rosser) of Haddonfield, N. J are the parents of a second son, bom June 29 weighing seven pounds, four ounces. ’They have named him Guy Kevin. ’Thmr other child is Christopher, eight years old. Mrs. R. G. Rosser, Mrs. Spicer’s •mother, plans to visit the family within the near future. Anniversary Picnic To celebrate their fourth wed ding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Ferguson, with a number of their relatives and friends, went to Aberdeen Lake Friday evening* In addition to a bounte ous picnic supper, swimming and miniature golf were enjoyed. Celebrating with Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson were their daughters. Card and Cynthia, Estelle Sellers and Sgt. and Mrs. James Hiltz and son, Peter, of Vass, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Ferguson, Hilda and Happy Ferguson, of Carthage Route 3, and Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Ferguson and daughter, Brenda, of Seat Pleasant, Md. Luncheon Guests Mrs. W. A. Muse entertained as luncheon guests Monday Mrs. H C. Gibson and Miss Jane Gibson of Rockingham, Mrs. Mabel Muse McRae of King’s Park, N. Y., and Mrs. Jewell Hemphill and Miss Jacksie Muse of Cameron. Coming Home Mrs. G. W. Griffin has receiv ed news from her brother. Hunter Byrd, of Phoenix, Ariz., that he and his wife are planning to leave the first of August on trip to his old home community, arriving around August 15. Mrs. Griffin is very thrilled at the news as her brother’s last trip home was, she believes, in 1929. His wife has never been here. Their parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Ed Byrd, the first set tiers to build a home in what is now the town of Vass. They lived for many years in the ‘'‘long house” by the railroad, near the Methodist Church. Hunter still has many friends here who will be delighted to see him and his wife. Personals . Mrs. W. D. Matthews of South ern Pines spent the Fourth with her sister, Mrs. W. B. Graham, while the latter’s daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. 'W. A. Muse, took ar trip to Morrow Mountain. They returned by Rockingham, stopping to see Mr. and Mrs. H. C'. Gibson. Mr. and Mrs. James Key and Betty spent Friday night with Mr. and Mrs. Avron Upchurch at Fuquay. Mrs. June McCaskill and daughters, Mary June, Katie and Marie, of Carthage Route 3 spent three days last week with Mrs. McCaskill’s father, H. C. Calla han, while Mrs. Callahan and her sister. Mrs. Ed Franklin of Dan ville, Va., were visiting in Con cord. Mrs. Franklin has returned to her home in Danville. Mrs. P. B. Irby and children visited relatives in Raleigh sev eral days this week. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Tyson are expecting their daughter and son- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Mann, home from. Washington, D. C., this weekend for their vaca tion. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones and son, Joe, visited the Morehead Planetarium at Chapel Hill Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Griffin spent two days last week at Ocean Drive, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Grahani and family of Graham visited Mrs. W. B. Graham and the Muses Sunday. Mary Lou Gra ham remained for a week’s visit. Mrs. Julian Smith and son Johnny, and Mrs. Arch McGill came home Sunday after spend ing several days with Mrs. J. M. Norton near Raeford. Sandra Smith spent the time with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smith, on Route”2. Visiting Mrs. S. R. Smtih Sun day afternoon were Mrs. J. B. Cameron and Mrs.. Eveleth Rich ardson and children, of Manly, Mrs. Louis Honeycutt and chil dren of Southern Pines, and Mrs. John B. Cameron and children of Asheboro. M>. and Mrs. L. L. McLean of Southern Pines visited the N. N. McLeans on the Fourth. Mrs. F. L. Taylor of Pinehurst visited Mrs. W. C. Leslie Monday. Marjorie Leslie Bullock went home with her for a short stay. Mr. and Mrs. Waylon Thomas and son of Sanford visited the L. B. Fryes and the James Key fam ily Sunday. Mrs. G. W. Griffin returned home from Albemarle last Thurs day after a visit of sever^ days. Her son Ray went to bring her home. Improvements ’The floor in the sanctuary of the Vass Baptist Church has just been sanded and refinished and new pews are being installed this week, replacing the theater-style seats that have been in use. Improvements are in evidence also, in the new educational building which was recently oc cupied. Back From Vacation The Rev. ’Thomas Wolfe, his vnfe and baby son, Tommy, re turned Sunday night from a two weeks’ vacation spent with their parents at Burlington. Their daughters, Karen and Kathy, re mained with their grandparents for a longer visit. While Mr. WoUe, who is pas tor of the Vass Baptist Church, was away, Sunday services were conducted by two laymen of the church, W. V. Nix on the first Sunday, and F. L. Taylor on the second. Associational Rally Girls’ Auxiliaries of the Bap tist Churches in the South Sandy Creek Association will hold a rally at the Vass Baptist Church next Tuesday, July 17, beginning at 5:30 p. m. Around 150 girls are expected to attend. The 5:30 session will be follow ed by a picnic supper in the base ment of the new educational building, and a social hour. Buffet Supper a buffet supper Friday honoring Mrs. Helen Hardy of Bonlee and Mrs. J. C. Wicker of Tucson, Ariz. Several friends called dur ing the evening. Personals Mrs. R. G. Rosser had as her guests Tuesday her son John and his family, of Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Beal and children and Judy Rosser are spending a few days at MyrtM Beach, S. C. Franklin, who was hospitalized for several months, first at Oteen, then at Swannan- oa, has recently been discharged and is now staying at home. Mrs. Thurlow Evans and her mother, Mrs. Ora Thompson, who had been here from Salem, N. J., on a few days’ visit, left Monday night for Baltimore. Sergeant Johnson is stationed at Fort Lesley J. Mc Nair in Washington, D. C. Johnson entered the Army in January 1951 and was last assign ed to the 24th Infantry Division in Korea. The 25-year-old soldier attend ed Benhaven High School, Olivia. Pfe James R. Sheffield, son of Mrs. Bessie K. Sheffield, Pine hurst, is participating in annual battalion training tests with the 25th Infantry Division Artillery on the island of Hawaii. Sheffield is scheduled to return to his regular station at Schofield Barracks on Oahu in early Au gust. A cannoneer in Battery A of the division’s 90th Field Artillery Battalion, Sheffield entered the Army in November 1954. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C. Sheffield attended Pinehurst High School. Billy M, Cole, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Cole, Route 1, West End, recently was promoted to specialist third class in France, where he is a member of the 7832nd Army Unit. Specialist Cole, a driver in the unit’s Headquarters and Service Company, entered the Army in September 1954. He completed 'basic training at Fort Jackson, and arrived in Europe in March 1955.
