JULY 19. 1956 County Roads Are Improved During June, Lockey Says During June, the State High way Commission completed a vast am'ount of road work in the Eighth Highway Division, Com missioner Forrest Lockey of Aberdeen reported this week. In Moore County, by contract, F. D. Cline Paving Company widened to 24 feet and resurfaced with sand asphalt on US 15-501 from Hoke County line north to a point near Aberdeen, a distance of 3.2 miles. The grading and structmres have been completed by Dickerson, Inc., for 3.95 miles on the relocation of US 15-501 from US 1, about 0.7 mile north of Aberdeen, to NC 2, just east of Pinehurst. Other Moore work included re- Burfacing both of the 18-foot wide lanes of NC 2 with sand asphalt between junction of new US 15- 501 and the junction of old US 15 and 501 at Pinehurst, a distance of 0.7 mile. Brown Paving also resurfaced with sand asphalt old US 15 and 501 from Moore Coun ty Hospital for 0.8 mile to junc tion of NC 2; and US 15 and 501 from junction of NC 2 in Pine hurst for 0.9 mile to NC 211. Brown Paving widened' to 44 feet and resurfaced with sand as phalt US 15-501 and NC 22 from NC 27 to the city limits of Car thage. Total length of the im provements is 0.56 mile. US 15- 501 and NC 22 were also widened to 24 feet and resurfaced with sand asphalt for 1.7 miles from Carthage city limits to Hillcrest. State forces completed a sand seal on the following 16 to 20 foot wide roads, and their lengths, in Moore County: from Harris, southwest toward "West End, 2.8 miles; NC 22 from NC 27 north to Parkwood, 3.4 miles; from NC 211 near Pinehurst north to Har ris, four miles; and from Harris to Colored High School in Carth age, 7.5 miles. A drag retreatment was completed by State forces on the following 16 to 24 foot wide roads, and their lengths: county road from Carthage northeast to ward Gov. 'W^illiams Tomb, 9.1 miles; NC 27 from NC 705 near Robbins to Carthage, 9.5 miles; county road from NC 705 north east to Howards Mill, 3.7 miles; streets in vicinity of Asheboro, 3 27 miles; other streets in vicin ity of Asheboro, 2.45 miles; and county road from NC 62 in Trin ity west, 1.23 miles. " fA 5 t W- Five From County Enlist In US Air Force During June Four Moore County men enlist ed and one re-enlisted in the Air Force during Jime, it has been an nounced by TjSgt. Roland L. Hughes, local Air Force recruiter. The four were James E. Besley, Jr., and Francis M. Short, both of Southern Pines, and Lester R. Lintchum and Paul L. McKay, and Beauford L. Mays, all of Ab erdeen. Besley, who had had prior ser vice, will be sent to the base of his own choice. The others were sent to Lackland Air Force Base in [San Antonio, Texas, for basic training. Sgt. Hughes said that high school graduates who qualify for technical school while in the first phase of basic training wiU have only lour weeks of basic. Sgt. Hughes will furqish further information on the Air Force en listment program at his regular visit to the Southern Pines post office each Thursday. Although cut short by late spring freezes, this year’s straw berry ' crop in North Carolina is estimated at 98,000 crates, more than twice last year’s.
