t \ THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1956 Air Show Staged By Paratroopers At Sicily Drop Zone Thrills I9OOO An Air Show and mass drop of paratroopers, joint exhibition of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Div ision and 505th Arbome Infantry, the the 18th Air Force, thrilled a crowd of some 1,000 spectators, including members of the Sand hills Kiwanis Club and their guests on Wedneday afternoon at Drop Zone Sicily, on the Fort Bragg Reservation. They saw 240 men parachute from C-119 medium transport planes to the ground in several mass jumps, saw armed jeeps, howitzers and Army trucks drop ped from the skies, the fully equipped and ready-to-go jeeps weighing 4,200 pounds, the how itzers, 6,000 pounds, and the tiuee quarter ton trucks, 8,000 pounds. They are lowered be neath two huge chutes of 10,000 square feet of nylon. The Kiwanians, members of the 310th and 322nd Logistic Commands in training at Bragg, ROTC students from northeast ern colleges, students of the Psy chological Warfare School at Bragg, and radio, TV and news papermen from around the state witnessed the demonstration, staged with military precision, without delays and without mis hap. It was a brilliant demonstra tion Of landing capabilities on unprepared landing areas, and of the load capabilities of planes and parachutes. The program started shortly after 1:00 p. m. with officers out lining through loud speakers to the large audience what they were to see of the joint coopera tive efforts of the Army and the Ar Force, as taught at the Af- Groxmd School in Southern Pines and developed and practiced at Bragg and Pope Field. There were many demonstrations in front of the stands showing, clo^ up, how paratroopers leave their planes, how their chutes open- of guns, jeeps, and trucks pack aged for drops from planes to land without damage; of how combat control teams operate in advance of the mass landing of paratroopers. And they saw if they looked quickly a numter of F1-84F jets pass the reviewing stands at a speed in excess of 500 miles an hour. The Kiwanians, families and friends were guests of Brig. Gen D. W. Jenkins, USAFAGOS com mandant at Sbuthern Pines and himself a member of the Sand hills club. They were transported to the drop zone in Air Force buses and, through the courtesy of the ladies of the Southern Pines Methodist Church, provi ded with box luncheons. lASSMED ADS Light face caps and lower case type, 4c per word; BLACK CAPI TALS, 5c per word. Plans for the tournament were made at a meeting led by Tom Cunningham, president of the sponsoring Sandhills Tennis asso ciation, last Thursday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Hodg kins, Jr. Though the Junior Sandhills In vitational had to be canceled this month, because of a conflict with the State Open at Asheville, it was decided not to incorporate a junior division in the traditionally adult event. This matter was dis cussed. A new trophy will have to be provided for the men’s singles | championship, as Bill Umstaedter of Abbeville, S. C., retired the W. M. Storey Memorial trophy, do- , nated by Voit Gilmore, with his tiiird-time win in 1955. Women’s singles champion is Evelyn Cowan of Georgia, who defeated Southern Pines’ Audrey West Brown (now Mrs. Harvey Johnson of Burlington) in the 1956 event. The Sandhills draws top players from several southern states. It is sanctioned by the Southern Lawn Tennis association and rated one of the leading tournaments of the summer series. Local Craftsmen Demonstrate Art At Asheville Fair A candle-making demonstration by the Carolina Soap and Candle Crafts, of this locality, is a feature of the ninth annual Craftsman’s Fair of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild being held all this week at Asheville. The demonstration shows the process of making candles in the old-fashioned way — pouring, wicking and dipping, all by hand —as it is done at the . Carolina Crafts shop on US Highway 1 south, between Southern Pines and Aberdeen. Jack and Jane Hicks of South ern Pines, owners of the soap and candle business, their daughter Debbie, and Mrs. Pearl Schutte, of their staff, are in Asheville put ting on the demonstration. This is the first non-menaber craft to be invited to the Guild’s annual big event, which is devot- led mostly to mountain handcraft industries, annually drawing many visitors from a wide area to look and also to buy. Their per manent display and marketing center Allanstand, is nationally famous. The-Fair is being held in the Asheville auditorium. The Carolina Soap and Candle Crafts makes scented soaps and candles. Besides their thriving tourist trade from the highway, they sell through some 2,000 gift shops in the country, but, their main business comes through the mail. Advertising placed in qual ity publications brings individual orders from all over the United States and several foreign coun tries. FURNISHED AND UNFURN ISHED HOUSES AND APARTMENTS FOR RENT.
