Stewart, charged with driving drunk, careless and reckless driv ing, hit and run, driving without a valid operator’s license, and damaging other automobiles in a wild driving spree Friday, July 13, pleaded guilty on all charges. An ambulance driver, summoned to the scene along Highway No. 1 by neighbors who had witness ed Stewart’s wild driving es capes, was fought off by Stewart. When two members of the State Highway Patrol, E. G. Sho- maker and H. A. Hight, Jr., ar rived, they took him to St. Joseph of the Pines Hospital in Southern Pines. Stewart caused so much commotion at the hospital that two members of the Southern Pines police force were summon- Testimony at the trial Monday indicated he had done consider able damage to two cars, owned by Gwen C. Johnson of Sanford and Owen J. Musselwhite of Wil son. It was reported he hit an other but the damage was only slight. Judge Rowe ordered Stewart to six months on the roads, but suspended the sentence on con dition he pay the costs and a fine of $275, part of which was to be used to pay damages to the two cars. Stewart also lost his driver s license. Judge Rowe ordered 33 cash bonds forfeited during the day. Other cases: Lura Owens, Route 1, Asne- boro, assault and battery, threats, not guilty. Frank Bailey, Route 3, Lilling- ton, driving drunk, driving with out operator's license, failure to stop unlawful possession of whiskey, 60 days on roads, sus_ pended on payment of fine of $100 and costs, license revoked months. Robert Clifton Dawkins, failure to support. Previous sentence, made on July 16, for failure to support, imposed for failure to comply with sentence (60 days in Moore County jail, assigned to work on state highways). Colon Cagle, Eagle Springs, as sault with a deadly weapon, con tinued to Monday, July 29, bond fixed at $100. Robbin Gabbirl, unlawful pos session of seal-broken whiskey cash bond forfeited. Charles R. Davis, Robbins, speeding, improper muff er, $25 and costs. Charles Evans Williams, Rock Hill, S. C., driving drunk, care less and reckless driving, unlaw ful possession of whiskey, 60 days on roads, suspended on payment of fine of $100 and costs, license revoked 12 months. Ruth Butner Leach, Jr., Aber deen, speeding $70, $15 .and costs. Arthur Thomas, Robbins, care less and reckless driving, acci dent, $25 and costs. John William Fry, driving on wrong side of highway, contin ued. Junior Whitlijey Ritter, West End, driving without operator’s license, and while license in re vocation, 60 days on roads, sus pended on payment of $200 fine and costs, license revoked as re quired by law. Cicero Dayis, Aberdeen, assault and battery, assault with a dead ly weapon inflicting permanent injury with intent to kill, prob able cause found, bound over to Superior Court, bond fixed at $500. Ryan Allred McKeithen, Greensboro, s.peeding, accident, caped and failed, capias issued, returnable next Monday. Samuel Curtis Richardson, El- lerbe, driving without operator’s license, $25 to include costs improper passing, $20 and costs. Leonard Thompson, Varina, as sault and battery in an auto while under the influence of in toxicating beverages, altilowing another to drive his automobite without operator’s license, public drunk, and Garfield Smith, gier, unlawful possession of in toxicating beverages, public drunk, 30 days on roads as to each,, suspended on payment of a joint fine of $25 and costs. Funeral Rites Conducted For Mrs. Carpenter Mrs. Margaret Wilhelm Car penter, wife of Claude H. Carpen ter, died Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Funeral serv ices were held this morning (Thursday) at 10 a. m. at the Powell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Roscoe L. Prince, pastor of the Pinehurst Commiu- nity Church. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and moved here with her husband from Canton, Ohio in 1937, following his retirement from the newspaper publishing business. Surviving besides her husband are one daughter, Mrs. Hairy Springer of Oklahoma City, Okla., two sisters; and one niece. Mrs. Harry Fisher of Jackson ville, Fla. Pallbearers were James Pleas ants, J. Vance Rowe, Jr., Louis Scheipers, Jr., Johnny HaU, and Dr. Clif McLean. Honqrary pallbearers were Hen ry Graves, Dr. P. J. Chester, Gra ham Culbreth, Judge J. Vance Rowe, and Dr. J. W. Willcox. Page, Jr., speeding, Rites Conducted For Aged Glendon Resident Tuesday Mrs. Lydia Jane Maness, 84, of Glendon, died at her home Mon day. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p. m. at the High- falls Methodist Church. The Rev. W. J. Underwood officiated, as sisted by the Rev. Kenneth Townsend. Burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving are her husband, Jonah T. Maness of Glendon; four dauughterS, Mrs. Charlie Dowdy, Mrs. Jessie Dowdy, Mrs. Joe Nall, all of Rt. 1, Carthage, and Mrs. Henry Oldham of Glen don; three sons, W. H. Maness of Rt. 1 Carthage, Frank Maness of Greensboro, and Floyd Maness of Raleigh; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one .sis ter, Mrs. Betty Boggs of Rt. 1, West End; three half-sisters, one brother, Alvis Martindale of Highfalls, and one half-brother.
