Home Demonstration Club News
Eastwood Club
One of the highlights in the
home demonstration club work is
when the members and families
get together for their club picnic,
which is held once a year. The
Eastwood Club held such a picnic
at Pinebluff Lake Saturday, Au
gust 4, with 70 people present.
Two tables were loaded with
many varieties of food.
After the supper several freez
ers of home made ice cream of
different kinds were served.
We enjoy getting together with
our neighbors, seeing our, children
and grandchildren plaVing togeth
er so happily and knowing that
they will soon become home mak
ers.
Home Demonstration members
play a part in helping make them
better citizens for the future by
the training given them while
young.—By Mrs. Sam Boggs, pub
licity chairman Eastwood Club.

Bethlehem Club
The Bethlehem Home Demon-
stratij)n Club held its August
meeting with Mrs. Earl Dowd
with almost all members and their
families present. It was a recrea
tional meeting and the members
made ice cream, visited together
and had a very nice time.
This community has been bless
ed with a good tobacco crop this
year and most of our club mem
bers are busy helping harvest the
crop. Many cans are being filled
with fruits and vegetables of
many varieties. The club lessons
on the seven basic foods are not
forgotten asi. we choose what to
store for future use.—By Mrs. Earl
Dowd, publicity chairman, Beth
lehem Club.

CAROLINA
Continuing Thursday, Friday
and Saturday at 8:15 p. m. with
a Saturday matinee at 3 p. m. at
the Carolina Theatre is the tech
nicolor production, “Santiago”
with Alan Ladd, Rossana Podesta
and Lloyd Nolan.
“The Vagabond King,” the
most colorful and rousing adven
ture story ever set to music is
coming to the Carolina Sunday
through Wednesday, August 26-
29, with three shows Sunday at
3, 7 and 9 p. m., week nights at
8:15 and a Wednesday matinee at
3.
The new Paramount produc
tion, starring Kathryn Grayson,
Oresto, the young European tenor
in his motion picture debut, Rita
Mprenzo, Sir Cedric Hardwicke
and Walter Hampton, is a glitter
ing film of tremendous spectacle
and sweep, told to the ever-fresh
ever-delightful Rudolph Friml
music.
Performiances, both musical
and dramatic, vie for praises for
magnificent settings and exciting
action in this VistaVsion, Techni
color version of a turbulent chap
ter in French history. The plot
of course, deals with Francois
Villon, the swordsman -poet
whose ragamuffin army recruited
from the streets of Paris battled
the might of the invading Bur
gundians in the 15th century.
In the title role Oresto proves
he has one of the great voices of
our time as well as a handsome,
dashing presence.
Well-matched with the lovely
Katherine Grayson, whose rendi
tions of the Friml music are in
themselves worth the price of
admission, the Maltese-born tenor
sings the famed “'Song Of The
Vagabonds” and “Only A Rose'
with virility and glorious soaring
tones, handles the sword like
fencing master, and romances

SUNRISE
Mysterious, alluring and fre
quently deadly, the jungle world
of Africa supplies the breathless
locale for Columbia Pictures’ “Sa
fari,” starring Victor Mature and
Janet Leigh at the Sunrise Thea
tre on Sunday and Monday,
day.
Actually filmed in Kenya’s
fabulous North Frontier District,
heartland of the dread Mau Mau
who provide some of the new
film’s many breathless action
moments, “Safari” is said to com
bine the splendor and primitive
pageantry of “King Soloman’s
Mines” with the mighty thrills
and love-adventure of “Mogam-
bo.”
“Safari” was filmed in color by
Technicolor and in CinemaScope.
Mature plays a white hunter in
the film:: Miss Leigh, a former
chorus girl who is affianced to an
elderly, wealthy Englishman with
an obsession—he is determined to
kill a black - maned lion, rarest
and greatest of the man-eating
jungle kings. The safari, under
Mature’s guidance, pushes deeper
and deeper into the dangerous
Mau Mau country, facing incred
ible tensions created not only by
the perils surrounding them but
by their own personal entangle
ments and conflicts.
The hunter and the girl are in
evitably attracted to each other.
The elderly fiance, .aware of their
mutual, growing interest, not
only attemipts to kill hi.*^ ri^•al
but disobe5fs orders in a desp°”-
ate, solitary effort to kill the
lien. Incessant I'lau M,au
reportedly provide “Safari” with
a trulv memorable climax.
About 1 Vi billion dollars worth
of surnlus arricultural commodi
ties have been sold to for“jp“'
countries in exchange for their
own currency since September
1954.
