Page FOURTEEN THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina PAGE “B” THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina THTIRSnav aTinTTcr THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 1956 8,000 Paratroopers Participating In Maneuvers At Bragg This Week - , • iir»i+c will al Court Of Honor Scheduled Monday If you’ve been seeing an unus ually large number of planes in the area lately, it’s because of a special maneuver at Fort Bragg known as “Exercise Pinecone.” Residents below Aberdeen have been witnessing the flights of doz ens of giant troop carriers, all in a mass airlift of more than 8,000 men and their equipment. The operation is the largest local joint airborne exercise ever conducted on the Fort Bragg reservation. Most of the troops, approxi mately 6,000, will be from the 82d Airborne Division. Other Army units furnishing troopers will in clude XVIII Airborne Corps Ar tillery, the 20th Engineer Brigade, 77th Special Forces, and many other smaller units at Fort Bragg. Troops and equipment are pres ently deployed at eight scatter^ airfields in keeping with n^essity for wide dispersal to avoid pre senting good targets for nuclear attack by an enemy. Departure airfields range from Congaree Air Base in Columbia, S. C., to Black- stone Army Air Field in Black- stone, Va. Planning for the exercise was done by Maj. Gen. Paul D. Adams, commanding general of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, and Maj. Gen. Chester E. McCar ty, commander of the 18th Air Force. A unique combat airlift division under command of Brig. Gen. Clayton Stiles wiU control the coinbat troop carrier aircraft tak ing part. This division is staffed with regular active Air Force per sonnel from the 18th Air Force, and Reserve Air Force men called to active duty for 90 days to par ticipate in^the^xercise^_Air_r^ tional Guard units will also sup port the exercise. “Exercise Pinecone” will test the mobihty and flexibility of air borne forces in addition to the mo bility of the aircraft during mar shalling and assault on designated objectives. After marshalling and loading aboard C-46 and C-119 aircraft prior to D-Day, paratroopers will be flown to Fort Bragg to para chute assault eight drop zones on the military reservation this week. Heavy equipment weapons and supplies will arrive by parachute for the troops on the ground. Once an airhead is established, C-123 assault aircraft are schedul ed to provide reinforcements. They will land on five landing zones with vehicles and additional combat troops and equipment C-124 Globemasters will utilize the “captured” runways of Pope Air Force Base and Camp Mac- kail. Throughout this week’s exercise atomic capabilities are being stressed. Arrival of troops and aircraft will be staggered to pre vent opportune targets to the “en emy.” XVIII Airborne Corps it self will have supporting artillery including the extremely accurate eight-inch howitzer to provide their own atomic potential in the field problem. “Exercise Pinecone” is the first major exercise in which regular Air Force personnel wiU be joined by reserve airlift wings and Air National Guard units. The airdrop and airlanding phase is scheduled for a one-day period, while the entire tactical phase of operations will nm for 36 hours. A Boy Scout Court of Honor is scheduled for Monday night at 8 o’clock at Page Memorial Meth odist Church in Aberdeen, Frank McNeiU, chairman of Advance ments, of Moorei District, has an nounced. Parents and friends of all Scouts in Moore District are invited to at tend.
