THURSDAY. AUGUST 23. 1956 Moore Scouts Back From Goodwill Tour Of Cuba; Many Places Visited THE PILOT—Southern Pines. North Carolina The first Occoneechee Council International Good Will Tour proved a highly successful ven ture for some 100 Boy Scouts and 14 Scout Leaders, just back from a two-week Cuban venture. Under the leadership of Billy McKenzie of Pinehurst, the fol lowing Moore District boys made the junket: John Chappell, Jim my McDonald, Kent Kelly and Jack Carter, of S'outhern Pines; and Bobby Grier, Bobby Tufts, Albert Snead, Ralph Gilliland, and Carter Burwell, of Pinehurst. They went by bus to Miami International Airport, with stop overs at Shaw Air Force Base and Hunter Air Force Base. While in Miami the group visited the “Seaquarium” and Cranton Park Lake. The trip to Havana from Miami was by the S. S. Florida, an over night cruise. Included among the interesting functions were a visit to the na tional Scout Office, an address by the President of the Scouts de Cuba, a tour of the t^evision cen ter in Havana, a visit to La Ca bana fortress, a concert of Cuban music at Bellas Artes Palace, a banquet held at the Comodoro Hotel, formal decoration cere monies honoring the Cuban Na tional Hero, Jose Marti, tour of a sugar refinery, an afternoon at Varadeno Beach and a tour of the Bellaman Caves. “The Cuban people accepted with open arms the Boy Scouts' of the North Carolina delegation. Many compliments were paid for their fine behavior as ambassa dors of the Boy Scouts of Amer ica. “Brisk trading and swapping of equipment and trinkets was car ried on at every stop between the Cuban and American S'couts; and the barrier of languages was quickly surmounted by both Cu ban and American boys, in this inspirational demonstration of in ternational goodwill and brother hood. “The American delegation set sail for the U. S. after a glorious week on the Cuban mainland, carrying with them the wonder ful memories of the fast and faith" jful friends made during their brief visit. “Upon arrival in Miami they boarded busses for Fort Myers and a visit to the Thomas A. Edison Estates and laboratory. Then on to Silver Springs and a wonderful ride in the glass-bot tom boats and photo-subs, plus a visit to the Old Auto Museum and the Ross Allen Reptile Ins titute. From Ocala the delegation returned to Hunter Air Force Base, and then back to. Southern- Pines. • The general impression of the many people observing the N. C. delegation of Boy Scouts was one of admiration for the humble and dedicated attitude toward their mission as “goodwill” represen tatives of the Boy Scouts of America and the people of the United States.” Page NINE THE LINEN CORNER Bank Building ~ SOUTHERN PINES CHATHAM COTTON BLANKETS—Originally $4.95.
