Club Friday Night
The State Highway Commis
sion has announced allocation of
$57,550 in cash aid to incorpora
ted towns in Moore County, eli
gible to receive funds under the
Powell Act.
Largest amount in th e county
went to Southern Pines, some
$27,277.79, followed by $7,991.28
to Aberdeen.
The allocations, on a state-wide
basis, were the largest amount
ever distributed since the Powell
Act was passed in 1951.
According to the highway
commission the total has been
increasing each year since the in
auguration of the program due to
the ever-growing volumes of gas
oline being used in motor ve
hicles. The fund comes from one
half cent per gallon of the total
or gross six cent gasoline tax
during the fiscal year.
Checks will be mailed to the
participating towns in mid-Sep
tember, the highway commission
s^pd. The money is for use on
street construction and improve
ments in the eligible towns.
Other allocations in Moore
County included; Cameron, $1,-
717.22; Carthage, $5,502.31; Pine-
bluff, $4,819.52; Robbins, $5,-
801.29; and Vass, $4,441.17.
Included in an account of the
wonders of Babylon by Herodo
tus, the Greek historian of the
fifth century B. C., are descrip
tions of immense walls, temples,
and hanging gardens, all built of
brick. The top of the walls was
25 meters (about 83 feet) wide
and allowed for passage of men
and chariots.
