s 9 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20. 1956 THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina Page ELEVEN Sandhills Given Boost By Sports Magazine Writer The resort facilities of South ern Pines and Pinehurst received a bit of extremely favorable pub licity this week as the area be came the subject of a two-page travel article in “Sports Illustra ted” magazine. Horace Sutton, a regular con tributor to “Sports Illustrated” and the author of a weekly col umn syndicated by the New York Herald Tribune, wrote the story after a visit to the Sand hills September 4 and 5. Describing the area as “decora ted With hounds, horses and golf holes,” Sutton took the reader on a brief tour of the many resort facilities offered in the area. He touched on the golf courses, ho tels in both towns, horse facili ties, and temperature. He also described the various methods of reaching the area and told of the type person who lived here in the winter months. “The difference between f- towns,” he wrote, “is that South ern Pines is horses and golf, and Pinehurst is ^11 and horses.” In the article, entitled “Caro lina Pines,” Sutton had the co operation of the State Advertis ing Division of the Department of Conservation and Develop ment. He was brought here by Mrs. Miriam Rabb, travel editor of the State Advertising Division, and while here interviewed James Tufts of Pinehurst and Mayor Voit Gilmore of Southern Pines.
