Page TWENTY jifi i—^^——■ THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 20. 1956 Adiai: “Doing Fine” (Continued from page 1) Somebody produced some water, iater, thus saving our life. Maine Brought A lift But long before that, food was forgotten in the arrival of all sorts of carnival “Joe Smith” gangs, a tiny grey donkey, bands and bands and bands; and then there was Adiai, His two sons, Borden and John Fell, were with him and there all three Iveses: Buffie and Ernest and Tim. Later we got a word with them and all asSted about South ern Pines, (No. they probably won't be down till after election day.) We complinnented the candi date on his sunburn. . . he has a be^ty and, in fact, looks ex tremely vigorou-s and perky. . . he politely returned the compli ment and we said we’d gotten our tan in Maine. “Hey!” he said, “Have you been up there? You sure did a good job for us.” There’s no doubt that the Maine election gave a great boost to the Demoprats. The speech was made in the enormous amphitheatre. You’ve heard it on TV, or read it, like ly. It was a strong and moving speech; one felt keenly the ter rific earnestness Stevenson puts into his words, the deep feeling that prompts them, But perhaps it waisn’t his best speech. We heard later that the teleprompt er, a new gimmick, was out of whack and made reading diffi- cuU. Stevenson spoke again two nights later at Fairfax, Virginia, a little country town across the Potomac from Washington. Here, to us, at least, the surroundings were more appealing and more dramatic. It wasn’t only that the drive out was along the banks of the historic rive?, past the Lm- coin Memorial, .witb. the Wash ington Monument and the crown of the Capitol gleaming afar, and on, circling the hill of beautiful old Arlington; it wasn’t only that. There was a feel of the real America in the air that night, the young America, the “new Ameri ca" that .Stevenson talks about. It was in the audience gathered to. ;hear him, an audience that filled the bowl of the great field where the meeting was held, right up to its rim. JSght or nine thousand, the pros estimated, came though it l)-"d rained hard an hour earlier. The platform was in the center of the bowl and you looked out and up at a rising sea of faces. And what fine faces they were! (letting in, we battled along through them' and got a good closeup. There were all sorts of people: farmers, ing and little businessmen, diHo, Virginia tlomen and th^ ladies, politi cians galore, of course. Perhaps a third of them were government workers, for Fairfax is in the center of much of the new hous ing development that takes care of Washington’s millions of gov ernment employees and public people. There were many, too, from the nearby .states ; as grand looking a lot of folks as we’ve ever been mixed up in. And we were plenty mixed as the state troopers stmggled to clear a path for the press. 'The New Stevenson" 'The Stevenson speech at Fair fax seemed to us the best yet in this campaign. It was clear-cut, hard-hitting and delivered with great force. Here’s a man, you thought, who means what he says and believes in it deeply. You listened a moment longer and then the thought came clear: here’s a man wdio wants to win. He wants to get a chance to try to do the things he believes ought to be done. He’s going all out for that chance. That, to us, explains what peo ple have been calling “the new Stevenson.” As Pilot readers may recall, we followed the Steven son campaign closely for a bit in 1952, and here is where we feel the biggest difference; in Stev enson himself. He is a bigger man than he was, more earnest, more sure. Not more sure in the way of easy, friendly under standing and handling of the crowds he speaks to: he was al ways a master hand at all of that. He is more sure of himself. Stevenson has grown since he was a candidate in ’52. He has studied, travelled around the world, seen at first hand con ditions everywhere; the things he will have to cope with should he be elected. He is ready now as he was before, hut now one feels not only a greater urge to help, to work for his country and the world, but also a greater un derstanding and ability. Though modest as always, there is a power in him that ■v?as not there before. He wants a chance to put it to work. As you listened to the roar of the huge crowd at Fairfax, you knew they were feeling aU of that and you thought: this crowd wants him to have that chance. Two Handicaps But can he win? There are those other big crowds that wiU be roaring for his opponent, they may be bigger and capable of roaring louder. And what about the most important crowds of all, the independent voters, who, pre sumably, are not roaring at all as yet? What are they going to do? Stevenson has a long way to go and a hard rown to hoe. Two se vere handicaps face him: The first is the complicated question of Eisenhower’s age and illness. The “part-time president” is a bona fide argument and a strong one. President Eisenhower has spent a great deal of time away from Washington, ill or vacationing; he has stated that he 'vyill continue to t£ike time off and to delegate many jobs to others and it is ob vious that he will have to do so. This is a new concept of the presi dency and one. many Americans do not care for. Again, many feel the haunting presence of Nixon looming in the wings and are fear ful. But to stress all this is to stress the illness and possible in capacity or death of a beloved figure. That’s delicate busi ness. The other handicap is the fact that the Eisenhower record which the President will stand on, is largely the Democratic record. It was only when they won the Con gress that his program reaUy be gan to move. Stevenson is in the dilemma of, on the one hand, say ing Ike’s record isn’t much good and, on the other, that it was the Democrats who made it for him. These are two of the problems that are doubtless keeping the Democratic candidate working late at night, this week in Wash ington, as he gets things lined up for the speaking tour ahead.
