Page TWELVE THE PILOT UNO DEAN TO SPEAK National Newspaper Week Will Be Observed By Kiwanis Club Oct. 3 Kiwanians of Moore County will pay tribute to the Moore County newspapermen at their regular weekly meeting October 3, it has been announced by Kiwanis Club president John Ponzer. Representatives of the press will be guests of the club and will hear Norval Neil Luxon, Dean of the School of Journalism of the Uni versity of North Carolina. The Moore County Kiwanians have dedicated this program to the newspapers of America in observ ance of Nationed Newspaper Week, October 1-8. . This is the 17th year that Ki wanis International has partici pated in National Newspaper Week. Dean Luxon is president of the Association for Education in Jour nalism, composed of 700 college and imiversity teachers of jour nalism, and last April was a United States delegate to a UNES CO meeting in Paris on profes sional training for journalism. He is a past president of the Ameri can Association of Schools and Department of Journalism and a past secretary-treasurer of that organization and of the American Association of Teachers of Jour nalism. He is the author and co-author of a number of books on journal ism, the most recent of which “Education for the Professions” was published in 1955. He has been Dean of the School of Journalism since December 1 1953 and previously was at Ohio State University for 25 years. He did newspaper work prior to en tering teaching in Ohio, North Carolina, and Texas. He wiU speak on “American Newspapers, the Best in the World.” In announcing the observance Ponzer pointed out that Kiwanis clubs in nearly 4,200 U. S., Cana dian, Alaska and Hawaiian com munities would pay tribute to the press in a similar manner. He said the international observance was designed to draw public attention to the importance of maintaining freedom of the press This year’s slogan for National Newspaper Week is “Your News paper—Freedom’s Key to Better Living.” The week, which began in 1939, is sponsored by Newspa per Association Managers, Inc. Reed C. Culp, International President of Kiwanis, who called for this year’s observance of Na tional Newspaper Week by the more than 250,000 members of his service organization, described a continuation of freedom of the P DEAN NORVAL LUXON press as vital to the democratic governments of the United States and Canada. Burning Permits To Be Required After Monday Travis Wicker, Moore County Forest Ranger, -announced this week that the brush burning per mit season for Moore County and North Carolina begins October 1 and will continue until June 1. During that period it is unlaw ful to start a fire outdoors more than 100 feet from an occupied dwelling house, during the hours starting at midnight and ending at 4 p.m., without first getting a permit from a fire warden or dep uty. Any person caught starting a fire without a proper permit is liable for a fine of not more than 450 or 30 days in jail. Wicker said. Bullock, Retired Engineer, Died On Monday Robin Alden Bullock, a retired electrical engineer who moved to Southern Pines five years ago, aied at the Pinehurst Convales cent Home Monday. A native of Canton, Pa., Mr. Bullock was the son of Dr. James O. and Alice Carpenter Bullock. Early in life he moved with his family to Lonaconing, Md. He was educated in the Lona coning schools and at Alleghany County Academy in Cumberland, Md. He later attended Ohio State University. He was with a New Jersey firm for 44 years, retiring in 1947. Mr. Bullock was one of the or ganisers of the New Jersey and New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association and was a charter officer. He served as a member of the Park Ridge (N.J.) Town Council for six years and was a member of the Board of Educa tion there three years. He still re tained his membership in the New Jersey Exempt Firemen’s Associa tion, and for 14 years was a mem ber of the Board of Governors of the Masonic Camp in Bear Moun tain, N. Y. He retired to Southern Pines about five years ago. He w-as a member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Ina L. Bullock; a daughter, Mrs. Warren G. Montgomery of Johnston, Pa.; three grandchildren; and one brother, Julius of Princeville, IlL June Blue Named Officer Of State Funeral Directors June Blue of Southern Pines, operator of Powell Funeral Home, was elected a new di rector of District Seven of the Funeral Directors Association at the annual dinner meeting held in Sanford Monday night. C. P. Rogers of Sanford, presi dent of the state association, was in charge of the meeting. Way- Ion Kennedy of Robbins, district director, presided. During the business session, Ollie Harris of Kings Mountain, president of the State Embalmers and Funeral Directors’ Board, presented new legislation to be sponsored by the organization.
