Page TWENTY Farm Life Group To Decide On CDP Program For Area A move to establish a Com munity Development Program in the Farm Life area was warmly greeted by a representative group from the. community at a meeting last Friday night. J. A. Glazener, program plan ning specialist of the State Col lege Extension Service and one of the principal figures in thei effort to establish community de-1 velopment programs throughout, the state, was main speaker. He: Ij-aced the success of the move ment in Western North Carolina,! where it has gained widespread acceptance, and urged that it be adopted here. He used a number of colored sHdes he had made in Transyl vania County, where he was for merly the county agent, to point up the many advantages of the CDP. ^ - The group, which numberea about 25, elected Paul Green to serve as temporary chairman for a .similar meeting tomorrow (Fri day) night to discuss whether the community would either adopt or reject the program. The meeting was held as an outgrowth of a previous of the county Agricultural Work ers Council, which had decided to offer and recommend the pro gram to one community on a trial basis. LOVE Spencer Love To Head Christmas Seal Sale For ’56 Dawson To Speak At Lee County School Meeting A. C. Dawson, superintendent of the Southern Pines school system, will be principal speaker at a din ner meeting of the Lee County unit of the North Carolina Educa tion Association next week. Mr. Dawson will discuss the legislative program of the state as it is applied to the public school system, and give a brief report on the bi-ennial school budget. As the legislative chairman of the NCEA, he attended the recent budget hearings and spoke to the budget committee, commending the state school board for the bud get. THE PILOT—Southern Pines. Hum phries, former pastor of the Church of Wide Fellowship here and more recently pastor of the Congregational Christian Church of Reidsville, has resigned to ‘move to accept a new position in Virginia. ' The Rev. Humphries was pas tor of the church here for seven ancL one-half years. While at K(-Ldsville he was instruinental in adding many new additions to the church there. He was a member of the Ki- wanis Club, chaplain of the Reidsville High School football team, past president of the RtaJlsville Ministerial Associa tion. and a member two lodges. He will assume his new duties as pastor of the Franklin, Virgin al ia. church the first of November. Spencer Love of Greensboro has accepted the state chairmanship of the 1956 Christmas Seal Sale, it has been announced by E. N. Pope, president of the North Caro lina Tuberculosis Association. The 50th annual campaign to raise funds for the voluntary fight against TB will get underway No vember 15. , “Although much progress has been made in the first half cen tury of the Christmas Seal Sale, Mr. Pope said, “we cannot afford to lessen our efforts against a dis ease which still strikes 100,000 Americans each year.” Mr.'Love is chairman of the board for Burlington Industries, Inc., the leading fabricator of tex tiles in the world, which operates 90 plants in 13 states and four for eign countries and employs 47,000 people. In making the announcement, Mr. Pope paid tribute to Mr. Love’s record of service to the state and nation in industrial, eco nomic, and educational affairs. In 1946 he served as Christmas Seal Chairman for the Greensboro Tu berculosis Association. “We are happy to have a distinguished in dustrialist and man of demon’ strated leadership as our state chairman,” he said. At present Mr. Love is a inem- ber of the Business Advisory Council of the U. S. Department of Commerce and trustee of the Committee on Economic Develop ment; a member of the Visiting Committee of N. C. State College and of the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administra tion; and vice-chairman of the De velopment Council of the Univer sity of North Carolina. As state chairman, Mr. Love will be the titular head of 101 lo cal chairmen representing TB as sociations throughout North Caro lina Funds from the Sale of Christ mas Seals are the sole support of affiliated Tuberculosis Associa tions in North Carolina. League of Municipalities was the main topic of discussion as some 15 mayors met in Raleigh Tues day with Mayor Voit Gilmore of Southern Pines, chairman of the League’s legislative commit tee. The group discussed problems common to most towns, particu larly as they relate to a town- state relationship. Many of the towns represented, it was report ed, had problems of annexation of new areas, for which they re quested that general policies be explained. The new staff member was graduated from the school of pharnlacy of the University of South Carolina in 1954. He works at his profession only nine months of the year, spending the summer months operating Son ny’s Pavilion, of which he is own er, at Cherry Grove Beach. The first winter after his graduation he worked in the Shamrock Drug Store in Charlotte, and last win ter he was with Pike’s Drug Store in Concord. unmarried. At Production of all milk in North Carolina, including milk for home use, for the first six months of this year is estimated by dair ysepcialists ith the Crop Reporting Service to amount to 862 million pounds. This is an increase of 21 million pound^ (or 2.5 per cent) over that produced during the s'ame period in 1955. An August 1 estimate places the state’s watermelon production at 2,600,000 melons for 1956. Marke ting specialists with the North Carolina Crop Reporting Stervice say this production will be 340,- 000 melons, or 11.6 per cent, under last year’s production. Mayor Gilmore said the group also discussed the question of trying to. obtain a more equitable distribution of in tangible and road taxes for municipalities, and the ever present problem of state mainte nance of highways that pass through towns.
