He liked the climate and the friends he found here and one day, having little to do, he walked over to Pinehurst to see “what was going on.” At that time Pinehurst was just being built, and in walking around, Mr. Pottle first met Mr. James Tufts, who was the founder of Pine- 'hurst, Inc. In the ensuing conversation, Mr. Tufts l^rned that Mr. Pottle was a hotel man (Highland House in Jefferson), and he in vited him to run one of his new smaller hotels in Pinehurst. It was not long though before Mr. Pottle, seeking larger quarters and perhaps more independence, moved over to Southern Pines where he leased the Southern Pines House for several years (it stood where the present day Post Office is located.) When Mr. Pottle’s lease ex pired on the Southern Pines House, his guests asked him to build his own hotel—and at the urging of his son Frank, who had assisted him in the business from the start, work was begun on the present day establishment. It was opened on November 20, 1913, under the ownership of J. L. Pottle & Son. Mr. Pottle continued the active management of the hotel until 1925, when he turned over the reins to Frank, who with Mrs. Pottle and their three sons and daughter, made their home in the hotel. They were active in the life of the community—tak ing part in all civic projects and Halloween Party Set For Wednesday At Vass-Lakeview Teachers and pupils are busy with preparations for the annual Halloween Carnival to be staged at the Vass-Lakeview School next Wednesday night, October 31. Stage show rehearsals are be ing held, voting for favorite can didates for the coveted title of King and Queen of Vass-Lake view' High School is being car ried on, and the elementary school children are all excited about their candidates for priijice and princess. The food booth will open at 6 p. m. sharp, the stage show will begin at 7:30, and many other at tractions will follow with the crowning of the King and Queen as a climax. The school invites the public to attend and join in the fun. the building of Southern Pines as a noted winter resort. Mr. Pottle managed the hotel until his death in the fall of 1943. In 1945, John and George, the two younger sons, caipe home from the Pacific and took over. George is the present manager and John is now managing the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Gai Mrs. Frank Pottle, their mother, still spends her winters here and helps with the hostessing, just as she diet so many years with their father. MacLeod Society To Hold Annual Meeting Oct. 30 The Clan MacLeod Society of the Carolinas will meet Tues day, October 30, at the American Legion Hut in Dillon, S. C. The meeting, the annual get- togetber of all MacLeods in the area originally settled by the Scottish clans, will feature a picnic lunch and a business ses sion. All MacLeods, including lineal descendants of MacLeods, or Mac Leods by marriage, are invited.
