In its first season the associa
tion could bring only one con
cert to Southern Pines—^the
North Carolina ' Symphony. The
lone presentation was due to the
fact that the auditorium was not
finished until May, 1950; the con
cert, which had been scheduled
earlier, had been postponed be
yond its original date, awaiting
-completion. Voit Gilmore, pres-
dent that year, said recently he
remembered the concert well—
“good music mixed with the
smell of fresh paint.” ,
In its first year the associa
tion’s accent on youth was car
ried further through organizing
the Young Muscians’ Concert,
held annually at the Pinehurst
Country Club in the spring. The
concert is designed solely for
young musicians in Moore Coun
ty with each music teacher sel
ecting a pupil.
In announcing the program
schedule this year. Dr. Langner
said the concerts had been de
signed to appeal to varied tastes
through the'presentation of both
classical and modem offerings.^

Southern Pines, other committee
