KY. Robert Lee Westmoreland, a 41-year old Negro of Brooklyn, N. Y., will be brought back here to face charges of assaulting and attempting to kill his wife about 10 days ago. Chief of Police C. E. Newton said earlier this week. Police at present do not know his whereabouts, but think he may be at liberty on bail. Westmoreland, a janitor in a Brookly apartment house ,arriv- ed here by train Sunday, Novem- [ ber 11, and made his way im- [ mediately to the home of James | Hunter at 620 W. Connecticut Ave. where his wife, Louise, was | staying. Hunter is her grandfath er. According to a statement given police by Mrs. Westmoreland, she was called to the door about 8:05 and told by Westmoreland that he had come either to take her back to Brooklyn or kill her. She refused, she said, and he whipped jout a pocketknife and started stabbing her. She related that she finally got' away and ran back into the house. She was taken to a hospi- ta> where the wounds were diag nosed as serious but not critical. Chief Newton said that about 25 minutes after the stabbing Westmoreland apparently stole a car from W. L. Baker of North Bennett Street. Mr. and Mrs. Baker had just returned from' church and did not miss it until the next morning. Police also said that Westmore land attempted to call his wife from Vass about 11:20, but was unsuccessful. He did reach a neighbor, however, and instruct ed her to tell -Mrs. Westmoreland that he would be back. Last Thursday police received a report from New Jersey State police that they had recovered the automobile Moiiday on the New Jersey Turnpike with West moreland and his brother, Hal, in it. A telephone call to the local police department from Charlotte Monday morning from William Bauknight, brother-in-law of )Robert Westmoreland, inquired if Westmoreland was in jail here. Upon being told that he wasnt, he brought his wife, Westmore land’s sister, to the phone. Mrs. Westmoreland, who was in the station at the time, talked to each of them and was informed that Hal Westmoreland was there and would also like to talk with her. He disclaimed any knowledge of the affair here, or in New Jersey, and said he had not been out of Charlotte at all. Robert Westmoreland was giv en a citation for having an im proper registration but the new Jersey police did not know at the time the car was stolen. Later after officials here had put out a bulletin on the theft through the State Highway Pa- NORTH CAROLINA MOORE COUNTY NOTICE The undersigned, having qual ified as Executrix of the estate of Cyril Bruce Gale, deceased, late of Moore County, North Carolina, this is to notify all persons hav ing claims against said estate to present them to the undersigneo on or before the 16th day of No vember, 1957, or this notice will be pleaded in bar of their recov ery.
