THE PILOT—Southern Pines. North Carolina
CAUGHT m RICHMOND COUNTY
Local Officers Initiate Chase
That Ends In Capture Of Escapee
The action of two Southern
Pines police officers, attempting to
stop a car fiere^ Tuesday night to
inform the driver that only one
headlight was working, was cred
ited by State officials as being the
spark that touched off a wild
chase that eventually led to the
capture of an escaped convict,
hfi} brother, and another person
in Richmond ODUnCy.
The three, identified as Johnnie
and Jackie Sloan, both of Lee
Countq, and Robert Goodwin, of
Rockingham, were apprehended

by members of the State Highway
Patrol and placed in the Richmond
County jail, where they still re
main.
The chase, according to a report
made by Sgt. M. R. Stout and Offi
cer Franklin Johnson, started
about 10:10 p.m. Tuesday night
when they attempted to stop the
car on North May St. But the
driver sped through town, heading
South, at speeds of 60 miles per
hour and faster. Between South
ern Pines and Aberdeen, the offi-
cers said, it was estimated the
fleeing auto was going at speeds
up to 100 miles per hour.
The policemen radioed their
headquarters, instructing the dis-
pdtcher to radio Aberdeen and
have a road block set up, but the
message weis too late and the flee
ing suspects ran through the red
light there.
Burney Sanders, Aberdeen offi
cer, joined the chase towards Ab
erdeen at that point.
In the meantime, State Highway
Patrolman R. R. Samuels, on rou
tine traffic patrol between Pine-
bluff and Aberdeen, saw the chase
and joined in. The Southern Pines
officers had to drop out because a
tire on their car gave out.
Samuels radioed information to
Greensboro headquartefs, the
message being picked up by the
SHP in Rockingham. From the
license number Greensboro was
able to identify the car as one
stolen there and warned Saunuels
that the men were probably arm
ed.
The car was finally stopped
some 16 miles south of Southern
Pines by Samuels and fellow pa
trolmen N. R. Davis and C. L. Rit
ter, who are stationed in Rich
mond County. The three suspects
took to the woods but were quick
ly rounded up.
Jackie Sloan, 18, escaped from
asBeaufort County prison camp in
the latter part of October. He had
been serving a five^ear term for
larceny in Moore Cfounty, which
he had started November 5, 1955.
Johnnie Sloan, 24, was released
from prison May 4 of this year af
ter serving a three-year term on a
conviction of breaking and enter
ing and larceny in Chatham Coun
ty. He also served a concurrent
term of two years for larceny in
Lee County and a third term, run
ning concurrently of six months

All three were armed with pis

burglary tools and one-half gallon
of white whiskey in the car. Ashe-
boro police officials called here
Wednesday morning and reported
that a quantity of tools and fire- i
arms had been stolen there recent
ly, but it is not known at this time
whether the theft was directly
tied in with the three men arrest-
ed.
They have been charged with
larceny of an automobile, posses
