THURSDAY. DECEMBER 13, 1956 Man Is Crushed In Accident South Of Town Friday A ycung McBee, S. C. Negro, crouched down between two cars changing a tire, was crushed and narrowly averted death Friday night about 6:45 in one of the most gruesome highway acci dents ever recorded in this coun ty. The victim, Malcolm L. Blake ly, 21, suffered a punctured blad der, a broken pelvic bone and had both legs crushed when Har-1 ry Klabbatz, of Southern Pines,' ran into the rear of a car parked just in front of Brooks Open Air Market on Highway 1 South of Southern Pines. Patrolman H. A. Hight, who in vestigated, said that Blakely was going from Durham to his home in South Carolina. Another car, carrying a friend, wgs immedi ately behind him. Blakely, the patrolman said, had a blowout and both cars stopped in front of the market. Blakely was down between the cars getting ready to repair the tire when a 1955 Ford truck driv en by Klabbatz rammed into the rear car. Klabbatz told the officer he THE PILOT didn’t see the car tihere. He was cited for careless and reckless driving involving a personal in jury. Damage to Elabatz’s car was estimated at $800; the two cars that had been parked were com plete losses. Blakely was reported in criti cal condition.
