C. B. Deane Denies Drew Pearson
Claims He Seeks Sick Man’s Job
Congressman C. B. Deane, de- |
»c!eated in his bid for another term
in Congress by Paul Kitchin of
Wadesboro, is feeling the sting of
columnist Drew Pearson, who has
charged Deane with trying to take
away an ailing man’s job.
Deane has categorically denied
a charge by Pearson, whose col
umn appears in hundreds of pa
pers throughout the country, that
he is seeking to replace Ralph
Roberts as Clerk of the House of
^^Representatives. Pearson made
the charge in a column last week.
Deane said the accusation is
“absolutely wrong’’ and a “prevar
ication,’’ adding that he had noti
fied Roberts by telegram on No
vember 29, five days before the
column was written, that he was
not a candidate for the $17,500 a
year job.
Part of Deane’s telegram read:
. want you to know that I am
not a ceindidate for Clerk of the
House . . .”
In his column, Pearson said
Deane had been “grinding out let
ters to his Democratic colleagues
begging lor Roberts’ job . . . whUe
Roberts is recovering from major
surgery. Deane is also spreading
whispers that Roberts’ health
might not be up to the rigors of
the job. Actually, Roberts is ex
pected back in his office in the
next lew days.” ,
Deane termed Pesirson’s “insm-
uation” as absolutely wrong and
bolstered his denial by quoting his
telegram to Roberts. He added

that he had received a number of

William M. Tuck of Virginia, read
in part; “Think your action in wir
ing Ralph Roberts was one of the
most gracious acts I have heard of
in a long time on the part of any-
cne.”
Deane said he notified all those
supporting him for the clerkship
of his decision to bfiw out on or
about November 29 and informed
them of his telegram to Roberts.
Deane also denied Pearson’s .as
sertion that other North Carolina
congressmen “are embarrassed

SUNRISE THEATRE
HAS UNIQUE
CHRISTMAS GIFTS
An unusual Christmas gift is of
fered by Sunrise Theatre. It has
fittingly been called “The Book of
Happiness.” It is not a novel, nor
a biography—in fact it is of di
minutive size and very unimpor
tant looking.
But when one opens it, it is soon
apparent that in reality, it is a
“Book of Happiness.” A beauti
ful holiday design and it fairly
breathes the Christmas Spirit.
Within are pages and pages of cou
pons of varying denominations
which may be exchanged for the
atre tickets.
These Christmas Coupon Books,
or “Books of Happiness,” come in
three convenient sizes and are
very suitable for Christmas Gifts
for children and grown-ups alike.
Few gifts are more* appreciated
than these Coupon Books. They
allow the recipient to spread the
gift over many enjoyable weeks
and bring the thoughtful donor to
mind each time the coupons are
exchanged at the theatre—for en
tertainment. adv
