i© Vi THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1956 THE PILOT—Southern Pines. North Carolina Page ELEVEN Blue Knights And Robbins Split In Cage Games Friday With a remarkable show of improvement over their earlier games, the Southern Pines Blue Knights half way pulled off what had been considered next to im possible Friday night by dividing a twin bUl with Robbins. “nie visitors had been favored to take both games but wound up losing the girls’ end and might have lost in the boys’ game had not two of the Blue Knights foul ed out. Final scores in the girls’ game, Southern Pines 53, Robbins 50; in the boys’ game, Robbins 78, Southern Pines 70. Roger Verhoeff, towering 6’6” center for the Blue Knights, at least tied the school record as he pumped in 36 points. He set tone record, Jiowever, by scoring 19 points in the first quarter, large ly on the feeding of Billy Hamel, who played a bang-up game. at forward. The 36 points was the most Verhoeff has ever made in a single game. And, though the records haven’t been verified. Coach W. A. Leonard said he was satisfied the record was at least tied. 'The Blue Knights got off to a quick lead and, at the half, led 42-35. But in the fourth period, with four minutes to play, Ver hoeff fouled out, then Bobby Parker, who had been playing an excellent game at guard, also fouled out. Robbins had established a seven-point lead with about two and one-half minutes to go, but Parker connected on three straight free throws to narrow the gap. HUl BosweU dumped in two set shots to tie the game at 68-68 with just seconds to go. In the overtime, using a make shift Une-up, the Blue Knights were no match for Robbins; the visitors piled up 10 points while the Knights were managing only two. The game left Robbins unde feated and, so far as the county goes, top team) hereabouts. In the girls’ game Anike Ver hoeff was high scorer for South ern Pines with 25 points, follow ed by Patti Britt with 18. Patty Hobbs was a defensive standout particularly on snaring rebounds. Janice Holliday was also out standing. For Robbins Hunsucker, who started at guard, was top scorer with 29 points after she switched into the forward position. The game was all tied up at the half 22-22. The defeat was the first Rob- FOR Land Surveying CONTACT Clarence H. Blue MaiHiews Bldg. So. Pines bins had suffered aU year. It es- H.
