Ford Foundation Funds Provide

Approximately $26,000, one- the wing completed in 1938
half ot the Ford Foundation
grant to the Moore County Hos
pital, has been spent for im'-
provement projects at the insti
tution, Hospital Administrator
Thomas A. Howerton reported to
the Board of Directors at its re
cent Annual meeting.
These projects come within
the terms of the grants, announc
ed a year ago, to the privately-
supported hospitals and colleges
tliroughout the country, amount
ing to half a billion dollars.
Howerton listed these projects;
1. Emergency power genera
tor installed and in operation.
i'^We will also receive aid
through the Federal Civil De

cost of this project,” he said, sta
ting that the total cost of the
item will approximate $12,000.
2. A new bake oven and food
mixer purchased and installed.
3. New roof over Annex No. 1,
4. Existing gutters on original
building have been replaced with
new copper gutters.
5. Stereoscopic equipment in
X-Ray department installed and

6. New set of operating room
instruments purchased and in
use.
7. New electrocardiagraph ap

now being microfilmed.
Howerton said that these pro
jects represent a total expendi-

thus far received of the $51,900
allocated by the Ford Foundation
to the hospital. The second half
of the Ford money is expected in
the near future.
St. Joseph-of-the-Pines Hospi

problems. Use of the funds will
be permitted for any program of
improvement or extension of

rently being performed by the
hospitals.”
Programs may be in the form
of improvement or addition to

It appeared from an investiga

Smith’s car were defective.
The tractor-trader is owned by
Marvin Pope of Monroe. Damage
to it was estimated, at $8,000.
Steed said this morning that
none of the six injured people
were on the critical list and that
only four of them remained in the
hospital.
He said the accident was the
worst in his memory to occur at
the crossroads.
! Last year there were 13 high
way fatalities in the county.
Christmas brings us thoughts of
friends, good times, and all that’s
