At least in Southern Pines. For the past few years an, in vasion of off-beat songs, begin ning with a couple of whining numbers called “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” and '’Tlu- dolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” were up among the top sellers each year rivalling such old time favorites as “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “Silent Night.” This Christmas, according to a spot check at Hayes Book Shop, the novelty times are taking a back seat. Only two or three are really big sellers: “Calypso Christmas,” which is pretty good, “Santa Got Stuck in the Chim ney,” and “I Dreamt I was Santa Claus,” the latter two strictly for children. There’s also “Christmas at Lib- erace’s,”' “The Angel in the Christmas Play Got a Code in the Node for Christmas,” also for the youngsters, and “Nuttin for Christmas,” a bit of a kid’s tune that had a big play last Christ mas and is enjoying a mild suc cess again this year. Others on the national list that have caused many oldtimers to wonder about the modem gener ation are “Christmas in Jail,” “Pancho Claus,” a south-of-the- border ditty that is pretty popu lar out west, and an album of Christmas “Rock ’n RolL” There’s also “I Saw Mommy Doing the Mambo With You Know Who,” a tune that really leaves many wondering where the Christmas spirit got to, and “Santa Baby,” a sultry song by Eartha Kitt that has very little to do with the real meaning of Christmas. One of the very best things Charlotte Dog Is Winner Of Stakes In Hoffman Trials Pam’s Smoky Boy, Ovmed and handled by R. G. Stratt, Jr., of in the younger generation have ^ Charlotte, won the shooting dog never heard. Better recordings' stakes Sunday as the final event that has happened this Christ mas, a trend that was apparently started three years ago, is. a re turn to the old carols that many by B. M. BuUis of Greensboro, was second, and Snite’s Delivery Rex, owned and handled by H. G. Snite of Goldsboro, was toird. Officials reported the stake was mediocre until the cham pion’s performance. The trials, which attracted dogs from throughout the Caro- linas, was weM-attended. and the tremendous sale that rec ords have at Christmas time have made it possible to go to Europe for many recordings and, fortun ately, to record them with choirs and other groups from this coun try. Here are a few old carols that are on long playing records along with some of the more fa miliar ones: “O Tannenbaum,” ‘ Nazareth,” “Patapan,” “O Sanc- tissima,” “In Dulci Jubilo,” “Pas- tores A Belen,” “The Coventry Carol,” “O Come, Little Chil dren,” and “Whence Comes This Rush of Wings.” And, to go a little further, if you’re interested in the variance pf popular singers with Christ mas albums, take a look at who’s recording: “White Christmas,” an album by Bing Crosby is stiU. selling thousands a year,-end al bums by Perry Como, Percy Faith, Jackie Gleason, and the Norman Luhoff Choir are up at the top of the best seller lists. Spike Jones has also recorded an album, not heard in these parts, but only because no one has it. Mr. Jones, to be sure, could be heard from miles around and there are few people that would doubt that. The real rush in Southern Pines, however, is for hi-fi long playing albums that have as many as 16 carols. of the inaugural trials staged by the Carolina Amateur Field Club at Hoffman. Rex Boy, owned and handled Oregon has led all states of the Union in lumber production since 1938.
