OM Carols Staging Comeback After
Several Seasons Of Novelty Tunes
Christmas carols are apparent
ly staging a comeback.
At least in Southern Pines.
For the past few years an, in
vasion of off-beat songs, begin
ning with a couple of whining
numbers called “I Saw Mommy
Kissing Santa Claus” and '’Tlu-
dolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,”
were up among the top sellers
each year rivalling such old time
favorites as “O Little Town of
Bethlehem” and “Silent Night.”
This Christmas, according to a
spot check at Hayes Book Shop,
the novelty times are taking a
back seat. Only two or three are
really big sellers: “Calypso
Christmas,” which is pretty good,
“Santa Got Stuck in the Chim
ney,” and “I Dreamt I was Santa
Claus,” the latter two strictly for
children.
There’s also “Christmas at Lib-
erace’s,”' “The Angel in the
Christmas Play Got a Code in the
Node for Christmas,” also for the
youngsters, and “Nuttin for
Christmas,” a bit of a kid’s tune
that had a big play last Christ
mas and is enjoying a mild suc
cess again this year.
Others on the national list that
have caused many oldtimers to
wonder about the modem gener
ation are “Christmas in Jail,”
“Pancho Claus,” a south-of-the-
border ditty that is pretty popu
lar out west, and an album of
Christmas “Rock ’n RolL”
There’s also “I Saw Mommy
Doing the Mambo With You
Know Who,” a tune that really
leaves many wondering where the
Christmas spirit got to, and
“Santa Baby,” a sultry song by
Eartha Kitt that has very little
to do with the real meaning of
Christmas.

made it possible to go to Europe

Here are a few old carols that

bums by Perry Como, Percy
Faith, Jackie Gleason, and the
Norman Luhoff Choir are up at
the top of the best seller lists.
Spike Jones has also recorded
an album, not heard in these
parts, but only because no one
has it. Mr. Jones, to be sure,
could be heard from miles
around and there are few people
that would doubt that.
The real rush in Southern
Pines, however, is for hi-fi long
playing albums that have as
many as 16 carols.
