CASH UNITED IN HOME CEREMONY Episcopal School Childreri Entertain At Christmas Program , The Christmas party of the Episcopal School was held in the fellowship hall of Emmanuel Church Friday, December 21, when the children entertained their parents and friends with a program and tree. ' With Mrs. A. H. Eakins, music teacher, at the piano, the chidren sang the traditional Christmas carols, recited the Christmas story ' from Luke, and poems of the sea son. The Rev. Martin Caldwell offered a prayer at the close of the program. During the social hour which followed, refreshments were serv ed. For years, Mrs. Katharine Betterley has made Christmas cookies for the party—bells, fat Santas, and stockings—and these were served with punch. Each child received a gift from the tree. Assisting Mrs. Betterley in serv ing refreshments were five moth ers of pupils: Mrs. Henry A. Jones, Mrs. R. S. Trudell, Mrs. Raymond D. McKelvey, Mrs. Tom Cunning ham, and Mrs. Tom Shore. Mrs. John S. McLauchlin and Miss Barbara Betterley are in charge of the school. MISS GAIL HOBSON AND LT. BURROUGHS OF PINEHURST WED IN VILLAGE CHAPEL St. Joseph’s Hospital Has Christmas Party With Santa Attending St. Joseph’s Hospital was ap propriately decorated for the Christmas season, and the holi days were made pleasant for pa tients and employees. The annual Christmas party for employees was held in the large dining room, where a tree had been set up. Around it were piled gaily wrapped gifts brought by employees, who had drawn names. \ Santa Claus arrived at 2:45 p. m. with gifts and candy for all. After the gifts had been distribu ted, carol singing was enjoyed, and refreshments of hot choco late, cookies and fruit were serv- ed. Santa then visited the patients, giving each a Christmas stocking ‘ filled with candy and nuts. Friday night, members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce sang carols. Midnight Mass was sung in the hospital chapel, v/hich was ^decorated with poin- > settias arid a small nativity : scene. The wedding of Miss Gail Hobson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Osborne Hobson of Pinehurst, and Lt. James Bur roughs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam H. Burroughs, also of Pine- hurst, took place this (Thursday) afternoon at 4 o’clock in the Vil lage Chapel. The Rev. Adam W. Craig officiated at the ceremony and nuptial music was played on the organ by Mrs. Richard Knight. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of silk organza trimmed with rose- point lace and fashioned in prin cess style with a wide v-neckline, empire waist and tucked cum merbund and a chapel train. Her heirloom veil was of rosepoint lace. She carried an arm spray of white gardenias. The junior maid of honor was the bride’s sister, Lee Hobson, who wore a princess style, ballet- length frock of white faille with a green satin overlay, a match ing headdress, and carried a spray of white gardenias. Brides maids were Misses Nona and Su san Figgatt, cousins of the tride, both of Chappaqua, N. Y., Joan Bertrand and Julie McCaskill, of Pinehurst, Page Blackmore of Southern Pines, and Anne Wil liams of New Canaan, Conn., all of whom were attired in gowns fashioned in a similar style to the maid of honor’s but of green faille with white satin overlay. Each carried a gardenia spray. A. F. Lt. William Burroughs of Pinehurst served as his brother’s best man and ushers included the bride’s brother, Robert C. Hob son of Pinehurst, Lawrence Johnston of New York City, Paul Kennedy of Honolulu, Hawaii, Anthony O’Callaghan of Larch- mont, N. Y., William Stout of Lo cust, N. J., and Henry Williams of Rochester, N. Y. A reception was held follow ing the ceremony at Drumduff, home of the bride’s parents, after which the couple left on a wed ding trip to New Orleans, La. Following the wedding trip, they will go to Houston, Texas, where Lt. Burroughs is stationed at El lington AFB. Mrs. Burroughs attended The Cottage School and the Pinehurst High School, Chateau Brillamont in Lausanne, Switzerland, and ; Parties Make Holiday Week A Merry One For Young People One of the highlights of the holiday season for the older high school group and college students was a dance for around 150 given by Misses Jean Franklin and Cathy Pollard at the Southern Pines Country Club Friday night, starting at 8:30. A Christmas tree and other decorations lent a fes tive air. Dancing to recorded music and refreshments of punch and Christmas cookies were en joyed. Prior to the dance, John Sey mour entertained 35 young peo ple at a six o’clock buffet supper at the home of his mother, Mrs. O. Leon Seymour, 223 Pine Grove Road. Friday night Bobby Cline will be host to around 17 couples at a buffet following the basketball game. This will be at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cline. Saturday night. Bill Marley and- Julian Pleasants will eriter- tain around 35 guests at a buffet at the Marley home on North i Page Street. In a candlelight ceremony atj 5:30 p. m. Saturday, December! 22, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Moore in Southern i Pines, their daughter, Dorothy Moore Patterson, became the bride of James Howard Cash of Raleigh, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Cash of Louis- burg. The Rev. Wofford C. Tim mons officiated at the double ring :.-ites. 'The bride, who wore a Dior blue gown with matching acces sories and a white purple-throat ed orchid corsage, was given in marriage by her brother, George C. Moore, Jr., of Dallas, Texas. William P. Johnston of Fayette ville, brother-m-law of the bride, was best man. The mantel was banked with magnolia and pine and held vases of white carnations. Tall branched candelabra with white tapers lighted the scene. Every member of the bride’s family was present for the cere mony, which, was attended only py the family. They are: Mr. and I Mrs. George C. Moore; Bynum George Patterson, a student at UNC, Cfiapel Hill, and Andy Pat terson, a student at Edwards Mil itary Institute, Salemburg, sons of the bride; Mr. and Mrs. George C. Moore, Jr., and children, Judy, Jimmy, Michael and Havid, of Dallas, Tex.; and Mr..and Mrs. William P. Johnston and chil dren, Janine. .Jan°. Bill Jr., and Kim, of^ Fayetteville. Tlie couple left on a short wed ding trip, following which they returned to Southern Pines to spend Christmas with the family. They are now in Raleigh, where they will make their home. Mrs. Cash attended Salem Academy at Winston-Salem and was graduated from the Garland School in Boston, Mass. Mr. Cash is a graduate of N. C. State Col lege and is engaged in the auto mobile business in Raleigh. In and Out of Town Katharine Gibbs School in New York City. Lt. Burroughs attended Staun ton Military Academy and is a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., where he was president of Alpha Delta Phi fra ternity. He has served for six months with the United States Air Force. Pre-Nuplial Parties Mrs. J. Frank McCaskill and her daughter. Miss Julie McCas- kill, entertained the bride-elect at a linen shower Sunday eve ning at their home. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Ostrom gave a cocktail party at their Southern Pines residence Christ- nias Day honoring the bridal couple; Mrs. Jules C. Bertrand was hostess at a cocktail party at her home Wednesday after noon; and Mr. and Mrs. William H. Burroughs entertained mem bers of the bridal party and out- of-town guests at dinner Wed nesday evening at the Mid Pines Club. Moore County Hospital ' Patients Are Visited By Santa And Band The annual Auxiliary-sponsor ed Christmas party was held at Moore County Hospital Tuesday morning, and Santa, resplendent in a brand new red corduroy cost tume arid with eyes that strongly resembled those of Harry H. Pethick of Southern Pines, marched up and down the corri dors, spreading cheer to all. He was accompanied by a ^ string band composed of Russell Powell, Todd Baxter, and Bob Miller who, accompanied by his wife, came aU the way from Jacksonville, N. C. to participate in the party, a service which he rendered while living in South ern Pines. The group was accompanied by Mrs. Alwin Folley, Auxiliary president, and Mrs. Harold Peck, who passed out beautiful orchids donated by Carolina Orchids, Inc., to the women patients, ciga rettes to the men, and gifts to staff and personnel. Just To Keep History Straight Just to keep history straight, the Christmas luncheon given by Mrs. Herman Shaw and Mrs. Wil liam Deaton to honor Mrs. James Pruitt was given at the home of Mrs. Deaton in Aberdeen, not in Pinebluff as it appeared in last week’s issue. The Deatons have not moved and we regret the error. ANNUAL TEA DANCE AT PINE NEEDLES TAKES PLACE SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29. Advance sale of Kckets for the annual tea dance to be held this Saturday, December 29, at the Pine Needles Country Club indi cates a large attendance. Tickets will be available at the door, or they may be procured from Mrs. Audrey K. Kennedy, Mrs. W. P. Davis, or Mrs. D. W. Winkelman. The hours of the tea dance win be from 5 to 8 o’clock. Music will be furnished by Dave Brown’s orchestra from Raleigh, a musical*group that has been heard at both the Pine Needles and Mid Pines. Pouring at the tea table will be: Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. P. S. Jellison flew to New Hampshire to spend Christmas with their son and his family. Lt. Col. and Mrs. Dan Adams and daughter, Danielle, of Ft. Mc Pherson, Ga., spent Christmas with Mrs. Adams’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Montesanti, of 240 Valley Road. Mrs. Jack Bechdolt returned to her home in New York City Wed nesday after visiting Mrs. James Boyd and Mr. and Mrs. Lochamy McLean. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Walker of Cincipnati, Ohio, visited his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Walker, East Illinois Avenue, from Satur day until Tuesday. Sgt. and Mrs. A1 Rowe and chil dren, Bennie, Nancy and Johnny, are visiting in Washington, D. C., during the holidays. Mr .and Mrs. D. C. Kanipe of Emporia, Va., stopped to see the Frank Smith family Monday night as they were en route to Florida. Mrs. O. Leon Seymour and sons had as euests last Thursday night her nephew, Lt. Robert C. Gordon, of Bartow, Fla., and sister, Mrs. Duke Duncan, of Daytona Beach, Fla., who were on their way to White Gate, Va. Visiting the Sey mours this Thursday are her 'sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Bugg, Becky, Martha and Sam Bugg, of Raleigh. Mrs. John S. McLauchlin spent Sunday in Troy with her sister, Mrs. Stewart, who remains in a critical condition following a stroke several weeks ago. Mr. and Mrs. Z. V. Tolar and daughter, Diana, spent a long weekend with relatives in Char lotte and Tar Heel. Mrs. Jean Richardson and chil dren, Jaan and Charles, of Chapel Hill spent Christmas day with Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Council, Mrs. Rich ardson’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. David Gillis and children of Mount Olive and Mr. and Mrs. John B. Cameron and family of Asheboro visited rela tives at Manly and Southern Pines duri^ig the holidays. Mrs. Millicent Hayes of Rich mond, Va., is arriving tonight (Thursday) from Richmond, Va., to spend a few days as guest of Mrs. Harry H. Pethick. Mrs. Hayes and her sister. Miss Webb, formerly operated The Ark School here. Mrs. Estelle Cameron returned Wednesday from a week’s visit to her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Hall, at Laurin- burg. Dr. Thomas Walker, his son John and daughter Mary of Indianapo lis, Ind., spent Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Walker, Dr. Walker’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. James Douglas had Christmas dinner in Lancas ter, S. C., with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sowell. Mrs. Eunice C. Hite of Fort Mill, S. C., will be a guest in the Douglas home this week end. VALENTINE Miss Sylvia MeLeod Weds Airman Valentine At Bennettsville Miss Sylvia Moretta McLeod, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D, B McLeod of 530 North West Broad Street, Southern Pines, and Air man 3|c Joseph Anthony Valen tine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Valentine of Yonkers, N. Y., were married December 19 in Bennetts ville, S. C. The Rev. R. E. New ton officiated at the single ring ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. McLeod accompanied them. The couple had planned to be married January 31, but the date was changed because the bride groom-elect was being transferred from the'Air-Ground School here to Ardmore, Okla. He left imme diately following the ceremony for his new station, where his bride plans to join him in March. B&PW Club Holds Christmas Meeting At Nurses’ Home The annual Business and Pro fessional Woman’s Club Christmas party was held in the nurses’ home of the Moore County Hospi tal in Pinehurst with the Pine hurst members as hostesses. The living room was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Guests enjoyed a delightful Christmas dinner served at small tables, and Christmas music was played soft ly during the meal. Mrs. Mahel McDonald had charge of the program consisting of the Christmas Story read by Mrs. Nancy McClellan and Miss Genevieve Mboke, interspersed with Christmas carols. Miss Jean Franklin of Southern Pines was a guest soloist. Gifts were exchanged and each member remembered the girls at Samarcand with gifts which Mrs Edna Jenkins of Pinehurst deliv ered. The meeting closed with the reading of a Christmas greeting from the president of the Nation al Federation of Business and Pro fessional Women.
