Page TWELVE THE PILOT—Southern Pines. North Carolina THURSDAY. JANUARY 17. 195T TOBACCO INCOME DROPPING Dewberry, Strawberry Crops May Take Up Slack In County Economy The introduction of straw- Moore from its position of some berries, and a comeback for dewberries, may contain the an swer to the Moore County farm er’s need for money crops to make up the losses caused by re cent tobacco cuts, farm agent Fleet D. Allen believes. PINEBLUFF By MRS. EHRMAN PICKLER Research undertaken in this direction indicates that both will do well in Moore County soil. Also, they do not take as much fertilizer as tobacco, and the work comes at a time when the tobacco grower does not have too much else, to do. ' , Allen and his assistant, Tom Hall, outlined their hopes and promotion plans to the county fcommissioners at their meeting last week, announcing that they had arranged a meeting for farmejrs interested in these crops, to be held at the courthouse Monday, January 28, at 7:30 p.m. Melvin Coby, Extension Ser vice small fruits specialist from N. C. State College, will conduct the program, along with a mar keting specialist he will bring with him. Allen said the Albritton straw berry “looks good” for Moore County. Markets are available not too far away, or one could be set up here he added. He said the newly developed Carolina dewberry is “working out fine,” and is far more resis tant to the brown rot than vari eties formerly grcjwn. This dis ease caused the downfall of years back when it was the na tion’s leading dewberry growing county and market. A good many dewberries are still raised and sold in Moore, despite the problems farmers, have had to face with them. L. B. McKeithen, Cameron buyer, says he can handle “a good many more.” Rotarians To Vote On New Officers At Meet Tomorrow Members of the Southern Pines Rotary Club will vote on a new slate of officers at their regular meeting at the Country Club here tomorrow.
