In Competition
For Scholarships
Thomas Vann and John ChPiO-
pell, seniors at Southern Pines
High School, have been named
finalists in the National Merit
Scholarship competition, accord
ing to Irie Leonard, principal.
The students are among the 7,-
500 highest scorers on a nation
wide college aptitude examina
tion given to 162,000 seniors in
12,500 high schools on October 24.
Vann is the son of Mrs. Cor
nelia Vann of 455 South Ashe
Street. Chappell’s parents are Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Chappell of 240
North Ridge Street.
They were given a stiff three-
h'our college board examination
last Saturday- plus intensive
screening of their leadership and
extra-curricular records by a sel
ection board. At stake are more
than 700 four-year college schol
arships, many of them sponsored
by business and industrial cor
porations. Included are 100
Sears-Roebuck Foundation merit'
scholarships and nation-wide |
programs sponsored by such
companies and foundations as I
Pittsburgh Plate Glass, F. W. |
Woolworth, Standard Oil (Indi-|
ana). International Nickel and
many others.
Finalists, expected to number
about 700 of the ones originally
selected, will be announced
about April 25. The eventual
