Page SIX THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 1957 Jaycees And Lions To Play Benefit For Dimes Drive A doubleheader basketball game to benefit the March of Dimes drive will be played at the Southern Pines High School gymnasium Thursday, February 7, it was announced this morn ing by Norris Hodgkins, Jr., chairman for the event. The first game will get under way at 7:30 between the junior high school teams of Southern Pines and Pinehurst. Southern Pines is coached by Don Moore and Pinehurst is coached by George Short, Jr. * The nightcap, biUed as the ma jor attraction, will pit a team from the Junior Chamber of Commerce against a team from the Lions Club of Southern Pines. Joe Carter is coaching the Lions and Joel Stutts is coaching the Jaycees. Hodgkins said that no admis sion would be charged but a col lection for the March of Dimes would be made. Commissioner. Highlight of the program was the awarding of six Silver Beav er citations and emblems for out standing work in scouting. One was received by Fred Chappell, of Southern Pines, and one was also awarded to Governor Hodges. Presentation of the Silver Beavers was by W. D. Campbell, of Southern Pines, the recently appointed International Scout Pearson Menoher, in that order. It was revealed at the meeting that Gen. Menoher is to be Oc coneechee Coimcil Scout Com missioner for 1957. Moore Coim- ty likewise provided last year’s. Dr. Grier, of Pinehurst. Also an nounced at the dinner were the elections of the following to membership on the Executive Board: Dr. Grier, Dr. J. D. Ives of Pinebluff, and Gen. Menoher and Lament Brown of Southern Pines. There have been 200 additional srout units formed in the council during the past two years, and a 100 per cent increase in the gen eral budget during the past five years, it was announced. Alard String Quartet At Flora Macdonald The Alard String Quartet, which will appear at Flora Mac donald College Friday evening as the third in the . artist’s series annually presented there, has earned a reputation as one of America’s finest chamber en sembles. The quartet, formed in New York City, recently won a Na tional Federation of Music Clubs award. It is the "artists-in-resi- dence” at the University of Texas and has concertized exten sively in the Midwest. Their program at -Flora Mac donald, which begins at 8:15, will include Mozart’s famous and con troversial C Major Quartet, which is noted for its daring use of dissonance, the first quartet of Bela Bartok, and Brahms’ great C Minor quartet.
