Tally Points Out
ii '
Inconsistency In
Foreign Policy
The moral position taken by
the United States in supporting
the United Nations resolution
calling for withdrawal of British,
French and Israeli troops from
the Suez zone was correct. But
our failure to back up the UN in
condemning the Russian inva
sion of Hungary shortly there
after revealed the inconsistency
of our foreign policy, Joseph
Tally, Fayetteville attorney, told
members of the Sandhills Ki-
wanis Club at their meeting last
week in the Southern Pines
Country Club.
Such inconsistency is danger
ous, Mr. Tally said. He saw in
the former action a step in the
right direction in international
affairs in the latter, a deterrent.
“We can’t wm the cold war,
nor prevent a hot war in this
way,” he said.
Mr. Tally, trustee of Kiwanis
International with its 4,000 clubs,
end more than 100,000 members
in the U. S. and Canada, sees
these two- countries wielding a
tremendous force for freedom
and justice in the world. Kiwan-
ians, he said, have a great oppor
tunity to inform the millions of
people on the North American
continent of this influence.
“If they learn the truth, they’ll
follow the truth. We ,can set the
v/orld an example. LoVe of liber
ty in the hearts of all mmn and
v/omen is the most powerful
weapon in the world,” he con
cluded.
The former mayor of Fayette
ville was presented to the club
by Lament Brown, solicitor of
Moore County Recorder’s Court.
HOW'S THAT?
Research has shown that the
ability of some animals to put on
weight or maintain body weight
on lower afnounts of feed than
some other animals of the same
breed is an inherited quality, re
port researchers with the U. S.
Department of Agriculture.

SS Disability Payments Noted
The reason that Federal Social
Security taxes for employees and
for employers were raised from
two per cent to two and a quar
ter per cent this year is that So
cial Security insurance payments
will be made to qualified disabled
workers, between ages 50 and 65,
it was explained this week by
Charles Shelton, field represen
tative of the Fayetteville district
office.
Mr. Shelton visits Southern
Pines on the first and third
Tuesdays of each month. He can
be reached after 10 a. m. at the
old Internal Revenue office in
the basement of the post office,
with entrance on the New York
Avenue side of the building.
The new system of disability
insurance payments will afford
■monthly benefits to many work
ers over 50 who are prematurely
retired because of severe long
term disabilities. Monthly bene-
iits will not begin until July,
1957.
