A. Mat thews of Lakeview was in court on a charge of drunken driving. As stated, he was charged with speeding 80 miles per hour, pleaded guilty to driving 70 and the State accepted the plea. N. C. Book Club Mrs. James Muse and Miss Dorcdhy McNeill entertained the members of the Cardinal Book Club on Thursday evening in the home of Miss McNeill. The presi dent, Mrs. Edgar Hancock, presi ded over the business session at which time the following officers for the coming year were elect ed: president, Mrs. H. N. Russell; vice president, Mrs. H. E. Bow man II; secretary, Mrs. Kieth Marks; treasurer, Mrs. Richard Greer. Three new members were elected into the club. Books were exchanged during the social hour. The hostesses served cherry tarts, nuts and coffee to the 18 members present. Mrs. Wilson Honored Mrs. Clifton Wilson,was honor ed at a dessert bridge on Friday afternoon in the home of Mrs. R. E. Lee with Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Russell Batchelor as co-hostesses. There were three tables of bridge and one of rummy at play. After several progressions, high score prize for bridge was awarded to Mrs. Sue Cheek and high for rummy to Mrs. Charles Cum mings. Low prize for bridge was won by Mrs. Frank McNeill. The honoree was presented a gift by the hostesses. Windham is visit ing relatives in Greenville for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. John Camp of Franklin, Va., have returned home after spending some time with their son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence John son, and family. Charles Cummings of High Point spent the weekend with his family here. Frank Harper has returned to his home in Lakeland, Fla., after visiting friends in Aberdeen. Toman and daugh ter will leave this weekend for Greensboro where they will join Mr. Toman. Miss Ann Sugg of Richmond, Va., spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. N. Sugg. Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Herring, Jr., Scouts Enter Into Many Events For Annual Birthday Winners of the window dis play contests which depict vari ous crafts and other activities of the Boy Scout program' in this area, will be announced later this month. Scout officials said this week. Judging of the displays was in charge of a committee composed of D. A. Blue, Jr., Douglas David and Louis Scheipers, Jr. The dis plays, placed in businesses of sev en county communities were part of the observance of the 47th birthday of the' Boy Scout program. Several other special events were held in conjunction with the observance, including Scout Sunday, at which many members of the various troops and packs attended church in uniform. In Southern Pines, a large Blue and Gold Cub Scout ban- Naval Reserve Unit Reminds Of Meetings A reminder to veterans, eiiher officers or enlisted men, to join the Southern Pines naval com posite company was issued this week by George A. Short, Jr., one of the officers of the unit. The unit meets each Wednes day night from 8 to 10 p. m. in Garland McPherson’s offices in the McKenzie Building. Former ly it met at the Air-Ground School. The unit is for ex-havy men or ex-Marines who wish to keep up their retirement points. They are invited to either attend the meetings or to join the unit.
