Humphrey wins Photo Prize In CPPA Contest A photo by Emerson Hum phrey, local professional photog rapher, has won third place and a $20 prize in the Grandfather Mountain Division of the Grand father -Mountain Camera Clinic, held last September. The award was announced last week at a meeting of the Caro- linas Press Photographers Asso ciation in Charleston, S. C. The association sponsored the clinic at Grandfather Mountain in western North Carolina last year. Mr. Humphrey’s winning pho tograph shows Miss Marcie Hampton, the Association’s “Photo Queen” leaping graceful ly through the air against a back- pound of twin mountain peaks, in such a manner that it appears she is jumping from one moun tain to the other. “Happy Enough to Fly” was the caption used on it when it appeared in state papers. Mr. Humphrey is a former vice-president of the CPPA and THE PILOT—Southern Pines> North Carolina Sister Of Local Man Dies In Sleep Mrs. Clyde Cameron Nichol son, 65, a native of Moore County and sister of D. B. Cameron of Southern Pines, died m her sleep early Sunday morning in San ford, where she had lived for many years. She was the daughter of the late John Buie and Barbara Ann Cameron of this county. Sur vivors, in addition to her broth er, include a daughter, four sons, two sisters, and five grandchil dren. Funeral services and burial were held Tuesday in Sanford. has won several prizes in con tests sponsored by the group in lormer years. He was one of five judges from among the photog raphers who chose Miss Hamp ton as their “Photo Queen.” About 50 photographers from North and South Carolina com peted in the Grandfather Moun tain contest. That’s the name of the Follies show to be presented by local amateur talent on March 20, 21 and 22 for the ^benefit of the Pinehurst Recreation Association and its project to complete its athletic field and playgrounds there. At a meeting of the committee in charge, held 'Wednesday after noon in the Pinehurst Country Club, presided over by the Rev. Dr. A. W. Craig and James C. Gilbert, co-chairmen, reports were heard from all sub-commit tees on their progress; from Mrs. Michael T. Pishko and Mrs. Daniel Delany on ticket sales; Mrs. L. C. Durwell, Jr., on tal ent, and from Co-chairmen Mrs. Henson Maples and Mrs. Leslie Gilliland on costuming Brooks Russell, of New York City, representing the Jerome H. Cargill Producing Agency, will stage the production, which will go into rehearsal March 1. The “Scandals” will run the three nights on the stage of the Pinehurst School Auditorium, called by Mr. Russell “as fine a theatre as we see in staging pro ductions of this type throughout the country.” C. B. Deane Enters Private Practice Of Law In Capital Former Congressman C. B. Deane, defeated in his bid for re- | nomination from the 8th District, has entered into private law 1 practices in Washington, joining a firm headed by Oscar L. Chap man, who served as Secretary of the Interior under President Tru- | man. Deane said he would continue to maintain his old office in I Rockingham, where he dealt pri marily in real estate and insur ance, but would devote mosjt of his time to his Washington prac tice. I Deane represented the 8th dis trict for 10 years in the House of Representatives until he was de feated in last year’s primary by | A. Paul Kitchin of Wadesboro.
