According to information re
ceived from the local police de
partment, Westmoreland was ar
rested in New Jersey while driv
ing a stolen automobile owned
by W. L. Baker of Southern
Pines. He was tried and convict
ed in the U. S. District court at
Newark, N. J. recently.
On release from Federal pris
on, it is expected Westmoreland
will be returned here to face a
charge of assault with a deadly
weapon with intent to kill.
His wife, the stabbing victim,
told investigating officers last
November that Westmoreland
had told her he came here by
train to get her to go back to
Brooklyn with him or kill her if
she would not go.
After he stabbed her, he stum
bled and fell, allowing her to get
away and shut herself in the
house from which he had drag
ged her, she told officers.
LIQUOR SALES
Liquor sales in Moore County
during January came to $121,-
840, it was reported earlier this
week by the State ABC Board.
Total sales for the State amount
ed to $4,877,412, the ABC Board
said.
North Carolina ranks eleventh
in the nation in cash receipts
from farming, according to State
College leaders.

nection they will have as guest
speaker Mrs. John M. Reagan of
Southern Pines, who, with her
husband, the Rev. Mr. Reagan,
will leave soon for mission work
in Japan. The public is invited to
attend the meeting.

a visit from her son, Capt. James

weekend to return to their homes
in Roslyn, L. I., following a stay
of several days with Mrs. Clar
ence M. Rudel.

turned from a six-weeks’ visit

Church of the Ascension in Mon
treal, Quebec.

Gertrude, arrive this weekend
from Larchmont, N. Y., to occupy
Column Lodge, home of Mrs.
Burlinson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.

gram. Mrs. M. F. Butner, chair
man, heard reports and presided
over the business. The hostess
served strawberry shortcake and
coffee.

ess to Circle 2 Wednesday eve
ning. Mrs. Grauland McCaskill
gave the program and Mrs. W. R.
Griffin presided. The hostess, as
sisted by Mrs. James Hanndlton,

Final Rites Held
Monday For Mrs.
Lula C. Barnette
Funeral services for Mrs. Lula
C. Barnette, who died in
Moore County Hospital Sunday,
were held at Jackson Springs
Monday afternoon. Burial follow
ed in the West End Cemetery.
Mrs. Barnette, who was 72,
was a native of the county and
had maintained her residence at
Jackson Springs for many years.
She is survived by two sons,
J. B. Barnette of West End, and
A. M. Barnette, of Wicimico, Va.;
lour daughters, Mrs. Jenie Teet
er. Jackson Springs, Mrs. Carrie
Brown, Troy; Mrs. Agnes Smith,
Fayetteville, and Mrs. Maude
Williams, Broadway; 13 grand
children; and eight great grand
children.
