Improvements Are
Noted In Highway
Work By Loekey
Completion of several road pro
jects, which give a new look to
much of the area between South
ern Pines and Aberdeen, was an
nounced this week by Commis
sioner Forrest Loekey of the 8th
Highway Division.
Several sections of existing
roads were resurfaced with sand
asphalt, including old US 1, which
is 22 feet wide^ from NC 211 to a
point .8 mile away near the new
US 1; Saunders Ave., 20 feet wide,
from old US 1 to NC 211, a dis
tance of .9 mile; and NC 211, 24
feet wide, from US 1 to old US 1
in Aberdeen, only .1 mile.
A new 22 foot road, running
from US 1 at the south end of the
Southern Pines bypass to Bethes-
da road at Powell’s Pond has re
ceived a soil-type base course and
has been paved with sand asphalt.'
That particular area has come in
for much work recently, as a
Charlotte firm also completed a
new 165 foot long bridge over the
Seaboard Airline Railway on a
county road nearby, between US
1 and Bethesda Road at Powell’s
Pond.
Construction of the new high
way took a fairly large amount of
traffic out of the Southern Pines
Country Club.
Miss Flora McDonald, said today.
Mrs. Callie Hardwicke, house
furnishing specialist of the State
College Extension Service, will
give the demonstration, which
