Fleet Allen, talked on gardening.
Our club has'had a very busy
year. We have donated money
and flowers to the sick, and a
pounding for a member who has
been in the hospital several
weeks. Some of our members
have built new homes and sever
al have remodeled and made new
things for their homes. We plan
to work very hard this year and
hope to get many new members.
Also to assist non-club members
in any way that we can.
The hostess served delicious

Mrs. R. B. Moore was hostess
to the Mount Holly Home Dem
onstration Club Wednesday af
ternoon, February 6, at 2 o’clock.
In the absence of the president,
Mrs. G. P. Jones 'presided. We
sang several songs with Mrs.
Moore at the piano. We aU
thoroughly enjoyed this. Mrs.
Moore led the devotional period.
Sixteen members were present.
The following project leaders
gave reports; home gardens, Mrs.
Edgar Yow; home beautification,
Mrs. John Gaines; family life,
Mrs. Jasper Marsh.
After a brief business session
the meeting was turned over to
Miss McDonald, home agent. She
gave a list of the varieties of veg
etables recommended for 1957,
then introduced F. D. Allen,
Moore County farm agent, who
talked about home gardens—
how to grow our plants at home
and the care of them.
Mrs. Grady Caddell directed a
game. We were paired off in
two’s and given a sheet of paper
with scrambled familiar sayings.
There were three couples as win
ners—Mrs. G. P. Jones and Mrs.
W. A. Gaines, Mrs. E. P. Brenner
and Mrs. J. B. Spivey, Mrs. John
Gaines and Mrs. Jasper Marsh.
During the social hour drawing
for the door prizes went to Mrs.
E. P. Brenner and Mrs. Jasper
Marsh. They will bring gifts for
the March drawing. The hostess,
assisted by Mrs. Ed Cockman,
Mrs. C. H. Muse and Mrs. Grady
Caddell, served delicious cocoa-
nut cake, pickles, peanuts and
coffee. The March meeting will
be with Mrs. Ed Cockman.—By

Construction Of
New ArmorySlated
To Get Under Way
Work on the new National
Guard Armory, which will be con
structed on Morganton Road ad
jacent to the old building at a cost
of some $125,000, is expected to
get underway within the next few
days, local Guard officials have
been told.
P. E. Ingle, Burlington contrac
tor who WEIS low bidder for the
project, told officials several
weeks ago that he expected to be
gin preliminary grading soon.
Two weeks ago he told Captain
William Wilson, who is command*
ing officer of the local unit, that
he would start “within three
weeks.”
The Armory, a structure which
will incorporate the newest inno
vation^ in its design, is being paid
for by joint funds of the town, the
county, state and- federal govern
ment. The local share in its con
struction is 10 per cent, which
amounted to $12,500. The major
portion, $10,500, was made avail
able by the County Board of Com
missioners; Southern Pines Town
Council allocated $2,500.
The local unit has a comple
ment now of almost 70 men and
officers. It is presently conduct
ing a recruiting drive, which was
climaxed by a public' display
and tour of the old Guard Armory
Sunday, in an effort to bring the
ranks to the full 105 men and of
ficers that may be assigned to the
unit.

The.Executive Secretary of the
Board of U. S. Civil Service Ylx-

week that there are several va
cancies to be filled in stenogra
pher positions, that the examina
tion is open, and that applica
tions are being accepted by the
board.
The starting salary is $3,175
per year.
Qualified persons who are in
