Aberdeen Defeats Blue Knights
For County Basketball Laurels
Teilk of constructing a consoli
dated high school for Southern
Pines, Aberdeen and Pinehurst
must have special appeal for
Southern Pines coaches: twice
during this school year the Red
Devils of Aberdeen have beaten
the Blue Knights for champion
ship,, first in football, and now in
basketball.
“If you can’t beat ’em, join
’em,’’ is the old saying.
Leading 26-23 at the half Sat
urday night in the finals Of the
annual Moore County basketball
championship, the Blue Knights
wound up on the short end of a
58-54 score. Thirty points by cen
ter Roger Verhoeff, easily the
most outstanding individual ef
fort in the game, wasn’t enough.
The Red Devils bore in and, be
hind the exacting shooting of
Smith and Harvey White, domin
ated the second half.
Aberdeen missed its chance of
sweeping the tournament when
the girls, leading at the half by
two points, 30-28, fell behind in
the thrilling second half and lost
to Carthage, 55-52.
