Roselaad Club i
The calendar says that March
20 will be the first day of Spring
this year, but Roseland Home
Demonstration Club women
don’t go by dates when they dis
cuss the first day of Spring. They
say it’s a feeling and the feeling
comes at different times to dif
ferent people. Right after Christ-
nias, when the year is barely be-
gim, “the first breath of Spring”
is wafted to my nostrils by the
flowering shrub of the same
name. Soon Mrs. Cora Kirk rec
ognizes the birth pangs of Spring
in the swelling buds and the first
forsythia blossoms.
Mrs. Clayton Kirk goes Out to
milk her cow one morning and
the birds sing so merrily and the
newly-opened flowers smell so
sweet they give her an exhilara
ted feeling. Then a warm, sunny
day and she has a touch of
Spring fever.
Mrs. Wilbur Laton says Spring
begins for her the day she de^
cides she just must fertilize her
shrubbery. For other women,
when they see the common little
jonquil bxirsting forth with its
lovely yellow bloom, it’s their
harbinger of the end of winter,
and they look forward to earth’s
re-awakening. Like Mrs. Bernice
Thrower; she walks in the great
outdoors and her thoughts are of
the beauty she sees after the
dead of winter. It’s the season
she loves best of all.
Don’t you other club women
agree with us in the Roseland
Club that the hard work and in
conveniences that are still the lot
of many of us are amply repaid
when Spring comes, in the re
newed spirits it gives us and in
the beauties that we country
women know best of all—the ar
butus blossoms under the dead
leaves and grass, the sight of
colorful birds as they bathe in
the brooks and build their nests,
to plant seeds and nurture their
growth, to watch the greenery of
Spring change from a faint tint
to the brilliant deep color of
early summer. 'These gifts are
ours, just for the taking of a few
minutes of our time to open our
eyes and our minds to the year’s
babyhood—Spring.—^By Mrs. W.
R. Robeson, Jr., publicity chair
man.
Weslmoore Club
The Westmoore Club met with
Mrs. Myrtle Brewer in February.
We were honored to have as
guest speaker, Mr. Thomas Hall.
He gave a very interesting talk
on gardens: how to guard against
insects and diseases in plants. He
also stressed the importance of
using mulch to hold moisture and
keep vegetables off the ground.
Also it’s good to rotate the gar
dens each year and to msike sure
you get good seeds and plants to
insure better yields.
We were sorry to hear that
Mrs. Fannie Stutts broke her leg
in a fall. We missed her at our
meeting, and will be glad when
she is better and back with us.—
By Mrs. Wade Hare, publicity
chairman.
Stanton Hill Club
The February meeting of the
Stanton HiU Club was held in the
home of Mrs. Duemont Smith
with Mrs. Jesse Wood as assistant
hostess. 'This was an important
follow-up and continuation of the
January meeting. Since it is so
important to treat and test the
garden soil for best results, much
emphasis is being put on this
stage—^the right beginning for a
good garden.
Our agent. Miss McDonald,
brought Mr. 'Thomas Hall, the
assistant county agent, to this
meeting as a special guest. Mr.
Hall stressed the importance of
this phase of the work. We feel
sure that many gardens will now
get the treatment, that otherwise
would not have. After we had
learned of the preparation of the
soil. Miss McDonald distributed
pamphlets recommending the
best varieties of garden seeds and
vegetables to plant. If we follow
these helpful suggestions, we
should all be able to produce all
the vegetables we need for the
coming year.
During the recreational period
the hostesses served delicious
cookies, nuts and punch.—^By
Mrs. Walter McDonald, publicity
chairman.
