THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 1957 THE PILOT HELD FOR SUPERIOR COURT Assault Charges Lodged Against Two After Hearing Last Friday Two Negro men, Fletcher Free man, 45, and William Wright, 35, have been bound over to the April term of Superior Court for what one officer described as “the most brutal and senseless assault I’ve ever seen.’’ The two are charged with beating up Hubert Michael, who lives between Aberdeen and Pinehurst, last December 16. Freeman, for whom officers had been searching for the past sev eral weeks, was found just last week in Bladen County. Testimony before Justice of the Peace Charles McLeod, be fore whom a preliminary hear ing was held Friday afternoon, indicated that Michael was in Jackson Hamlet, in company with his 11-year old son, looking for a woman who had been stay ing with his sick wife. He had, driven up to a home there and wanted to know if she had re turned from Wa^am. Freeman, he said, cursed him at that point. Later, he testified, he went to the home of Cleveland Patterson to inquire the woman’s whereabouts and it was there that the two Negroes jumped him and beat him senseless. Patter son said he saw Freeman kick Michael and also saw Wright hit him in the head with a bottle. Patterson and Michael’s son took him to Moore County Hos pital where he was confined two weeks. Freeman was taken into Moore Recorder’s Court in February by mistake and, when no warrant could be found, he was turned loose. Deputy Sheriff A. F; Dees foimd him in Bladen County Eind he was returned here February 25. Both made $500 bond for their appearances in Superior Court. According to 1955 data, cows producing less than 250 pounds of butterfat per cow per year are not making their owners any money. If you have any produc ing at this low level, now is a good time to start culling them out. WITH THE Armed Forces James V. Hatch, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. V.
