THURSDAY, MARCH 28. 1957 THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina Page NINETEEN Architect Who Studied Here Wins Top Travel Prize Robert Paschal Burns, Jr., a fifth year student in the school of design at North Carolina State CoUege has won the world’s top academic award in the field of architecture. , Burns, who spent three months in Southern Pines two years ago working with E. J. Austin, local architect, wiU receive the $5,000 Paris prize in architecture. He will spent 12 months travelling in Europe and six months travel ing in the western hemisphere. While in Paris, he will study one architectural problem at the Eeole des Beaux Arts. Last summer Burns visited Southern Pines on several occa sions and made a complete study 'of the Shaw House as a regional study in architecture. He selected the old house for a problem that architectural students must do I during their college careers; take ! an old building, study it from an I architectural stand^int, and (write a paper on the soundness and durability of that type archi tecture. He will leave for Paris in July. The girls team at West South ern Pines also won the county girls’ crown by defeating Berkley of Aberdeen. In the boys’ game, which weis carried to a doublet overtime, Al exander Lloyd was the big gtm. His control of both boards gave the Yellowjackets most of the re bounds. Lloyd was chosen, for the good sportsmanship award foUowing the game by a unanimous vote of the selection committee. Patricia Mhrphy, guard for the girls’ team, was named the outstanding girl player. The girls ended their season with an 18-4 record. The boys marked up a 21-5 season, topped by four straight wins over Aber deen, arch rivals. PINEBLUFF By MRS. EHRMAN PICKLER MYF Party Members of the senior MYF of Pinebluff Methodist Church, along with a number Of invited guests from Aberdeen, enjoyed a party Saturday night at the Home Demonstration Club house. About 40 were present for the evening of dancing and games. Refreshments of sandwiches, potato chips, cookies and drinks were served. Mrs. O. C. Adcox is coimselor. Brief Mention Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Sessoms and Mrs. Lang Hales visited Mrs. Hales’ daughter, Mrs. Jack Sted- man, and Mr. Stedman in Fay etteville Sunday. Mrs. Hales re mained for a visit. Mr. and Mrs. John Sturm of Randleman spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Mc- Murray. Miss Jane Land, a senior at State College, Raleigh, visited Mrs. Eloise Adcox Bleau Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Carpenter and children spent the weekend in Atkinson with Mrs. Carpen ter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lon nie Gray. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Perkins and children, of Cleveland, Ohio, were weekend guests of Mr. Per kins’ sister, Mrs. Lewis Marts, and Mr. Marts. They were en route to Florida. Mrs. J. R. Lampley spent the weekend in Jonesboro Heights, Sanford, with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Melton. Mrs. Lewis Marts received word last week that her step-' father, Samuel M. Saunders, had passed awav in New Symma Beach, Fla. Funeral services were held last Thursday in Wilming ton. Del. Mr. and Mrs. Manlev Wellman of Chanel Hill spent Sunday in Pinebluff. They attended Open House at the new library and visited friends. Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Morgan of Raleigh were guests Sunday of her sister. Mrs. W. R. Griffin. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Allison and children of Mt. Gilead spent Sunday with his mother, Mrs. Hazel Allison. Lt. CoL Sitterson And ‘Atomic’ Force Move To Europe The 613th Field Artillery Bat talion at Fort Bragg, of which Lt. Col. John D. Sitterson, Jr., of Southern Pines is commanding of ficer, started its Operation Gyro scope move to Germany this week. The move climaxes more than six months of preparation. The 613th, with the powerful 280mm “atomic” artillery, will form a key part of the North At lantic Treaty Alliance forces. The 280 is capable of firing either a conventional high explosive pro jectile or one with an atomic war head. The battalion is traveling by troop train to New York. There it will board ship for the eight- day trip to the German port of Bremerhaven. Last leg of the trip will .be to Pirmasens, where the 613th will replace the 59th Field Artillery Battalion which will in turn move to Bragg to fill the spot vacated by the 613th. The battalion has been strength ened by the addition of about 340 men who reported to Fort Bragg as recruits in November. VJives and children will accom pany the soldiers on the trip to Germany. Lt. Col. Sitterson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Sitterson of Southern Pines. He was named commanding officer of the 613th last October. He is a graduate of the United States Military Acad emy and saw duty in World War 2 with the 78th Infantry Division in Europe. His other assignments have car ried him to the American Embas sy, as a'ssistant military attache, in New Delhi, India, U. S. Army attache in !^urma. Fort Sill, Okla., where he was executive officer of the artillery school department of extension courses, and a member of the G-3 staff and the Depart ment of Defense in Washington. He is married to the former Marie Hopkins of Kingston, Pa. Funeral Services Held Tuesday For Mrs. Lula Baker Mrs. Lula Violet Baker, 63, of Route 2, Cameron, died Sunday night in Lee County Hospital Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2:30 o’clock' at the Church of God in Duncan by the Rev. Irvin Stevens of Lil- lington. Burial was in the Baker family cemetery near the church. Mrs. Baker was born in Wake County, daughter of the late West and Lou Baker Dean. Surviving are her husband, Nathan I. Baker; six sons, Na than J. Baker of Sanford, Thad- deus G. Baker of Route 2, Cam eron, Howard Baker of Sanford, Archie W. Baker of the home, David Baker of the U. S. Army, and Bobbie Ray Baker of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Ed na James of Raleigh, Mrs. Zora Blue and Mrs. Betty West of Raleigh; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Thompson and Mrs. Connie Thompson of Garner, Mrs. Beu lah Price and Mrs. Lora Page of Route 3, Raleigh; and 20 grand children. Truck Driver Gets Fined For Traffic Accident Sunday • ♦ Henry L. Host, truck driver for the Carolina Cake Company of Concord, was fined $25 and costs in Recorder’s Court Monday morning for careless and reckless driving and causing an accident in Southern Pines. Bost, local officers said, was charged with running a red light at the intersection of Massachu setts Ave. and May St. and ram ming into a car driven by Wil- j liam MacFarlane of Rochester, N.' Y. The collision occurred about, 1 p. m. Sunday. A passenger in the MacFarlane car, James Williamson of Schuyl- ■ kill, Pa., was hospitalized with I a fractured ankle and minor in-| juries. Mr. McFarlane suffered, injuries to a finger. | Bost testified in Recorder’s | Court that he did not see the' light. His truck was damaged only slightly. The MacFarlane car was damaged an estimated $700 or $800. In addition to that arrest, Southern Pines policemen also' docketed 10 other people over' the weekend on a variety of charges.
