N. C. Bird Sanctuary . . . Last week at the request of the governing authorities of the Town of Rob bins I introduced a bill making that town a bird sanctuary. This bill was similar to the one pre viously introduced to make Cam eron a bird sanctuary. Vass Bills ... On Tuesdhy at the request of the governing au thorities of the Town of Vass I introduced a bill which would; 1, Establish the center point of the Town of Vass; 2, Provide that the Mayor and Tpwn Commis sioners shall take office at the first regular Board meeting fol lowing their election; 3, Provide that with the meeting of the Town Commissioners in July, 1957, each Commissioner shall receive for his attendance at each regular Board meeting the sum of five dollcirs and the Mayor shall receive for his attendance at each regular Board meeting the sum of ten dollars, but said sums shall not be paid for at tending more than one regular Board meeting in any one month. Robbins Community Building . . . Upon request of the governing authorities of the Town of Rob bins I introduced a bill on Tues day which will permit the Town Commissioners to lease the Com munity Building there without advertising or receiving public bids. It has been suggested to me that Moore County should be included among the several coimties which prohibit the practice of clairvoyance or fortime telling. I am seriously considering offer ing such a bill for Moore County. Aberdeen. . . For the Town of Aberdeen I introduced last week a bill which provides that any qualified voter of Sandhill Town ship is eligible for election as re corder and prosecuting attorney of the Aberdeen Recorder’s Court. The bill also provides that any qualified elector of Sand hill Township is eligible for ap pointment as vice-recorder. Not Passed . . . None of these bills have been pased and rati fied and if there is objection to them I want the people to let me know immediately. Now, as in the past, I shall publicize all bills before they are passed and if the people think any unwise I cer tainly will be glad to hear from them now and not after they have been ratified and are law. Doings . . . This is a big week in the General Assembly, Mon day night the joint Appropria tions Committee was briefed re garding the money which the state , spends on our public schools. The total output for our public schools is about 66 per cent of the general fund revenue and appropriations. On 'Tuesday the Appropriations Committees heard represents tives of the State School Board at an oveiflow meeting in the Highway Building speak in be half of their school fund recom Entries For Farm Contest Coming In Coimty Agent'Says Interest in the Farm Income Contest, sponsored jointly in this county by The News and Obser ver and The Pilot, is mounting and entries are being received every day, according to Fleet Al len, county farm agent. The contest, originated by the Raleigh newspaper to encourage farmers to boost their falling farm incomes, is open to any farmer. Prizes totalling almost $7,000 will be distributed at the end of the contest in December. The Pilot is making additional prizes avail able on a local level. Allen said today it was impos sible at present to determine the exact number of entries received to date. The cmmty agricultural council, composed of teachers, farm and home agents, and others who work in agriculture as a pro fession, meets once each month and, until the next meeting early in April, the amount of entries cannot be determine^;!. At least 50 farmers must enter the contest in order for the coun ty to qualify for the larger prizes being made available by the News andi Observer. Top prize for a family is $500, which can be, won by anyone in a 54-ooiftty area, mostly in Eastern North Carolina. Ursula Sieger Herr Is Practice Teaching Ursula Sieger Herr of South ern Pines, a Duke University .senior, has started a two-month student teaching internship in Bowman Gray High School, Wki- ston-Salem. Miss Herr is teaching United States history.
