William S. Greene, Jr., science
and mathematics teacher in the
Blowing Rock (N. C.) high
school, was recently named the
recipient of a $4,000 grant from
the National Science Foundation
for a year’s study at the Univer
sity of North Carolina.
Greene is the husband of the
former Mary.Ann Tate, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Tate of
Pinehurst.
A graduate of UNC, he was
connected with a textile design
firm in Charlotte before going to
Blowing Rock in 1955.
The National Science Founda
tion’s purpose in giving ^ants to
the University of North Carolina
is to help 50 science and mathe
matics teachers improve then-
knowledge of subject matter and
their .skill in teaching at the sec
ondary leveL It is to be a part of
a nationwide effort to help teach
ers “fulfill their role in preparing
high quality scientists and en
gineers of the future.” The pro
ject is expected to continue for a
five-year period.

W. D. Campbell of Southern
Pines, United States repre
sentative on the international
board, was also there and was
one of the featured speakers.
Occoneechee Council was rep
resented by 37 members of the
councU, of which Moore County
is a district.
Principal speaker was Dr. Ar
thur Shuck, chief executive of
scouting in the United States.
Camporee
It has been announced that a
camporee has been scheduled at
McArtiiur Lake on the Fort
Bragg Military Reservation May
3-5. McArthur Lake was the
scene of a very successful camp
oree held last month. Further in
formation will be published later
in ApriL
Scout Circus
The annual Scout Circus for
members of Occoneechee Coun
cil will be held Saturday in Ra
leigh. Five thousand scouts and
the ir leaders from 12 counties will
take part in demonstrations of
scout skills and creifts.
Three Moore District units will
be featured: Troop 206, of Pine-
bluff, Troop 810 of Vass, and
Troop 147, Vass.
All events will be hdd in the
William Neal Reynolds Coliseum
beginning at 7:30. Tickets are ob
tainable only from Boy Scouts.
ARMED FORCES
Cadet James W. Bradin, 21, son
of Maj. B. M. Bradin, Southern
Pines, was one of more than 200
students from The Citadel,
Charleston, S. C., who recently
visited Fort Bragg.
During their two-day stay the
cadets witnessed an airborne tac
tical trsdning exercise and a spe
cial demonstration of basic air
borne training.
