Ninth Air Force’s composite air
strike force now participating in
“Exercise Carib-ex” in the Pan
ama Canal Zone.
Top Latin American officials
from 21 nations will be among
.spectators for the exercise, which
began Monday. Through the ex
ercise, Tactical Air Command
will test its strength as a deter
rent to global war through dem
onstrations of mobility and flexi
bility. Elements of the command
to be utilized include tactical
bombers, photo recon and troop
carrier aircraft.
Army Pvt. Garland D. Dowd,
son of Mrs. Ethel Dowd, Carth
age, is receiving basic training
with the 3rd Infantry Division
at Fort Benning, Ga.
Dowd was formerly employed
by the Riley Paving Company.
Two Southern Pines soldiers,
Sgt. Paul H. Wallen and Sgt.
Joseph W. Smith, recently par
ticipated in a five-day field
training exercise with the 11th
Airborne Division’s 187th Infan
try in Germany.
WaUen, son of Mrs. Emma
Wallen, 255 Morganton Rd., is a
squad leader in the infantry’s
Headquarters and Service Com
pany. He entered the Army in
July, 1954, and arrived in Eu

1954 graduate of Southern Pines
High School.

Continuing through Saturday
at the Carolina 'Theatre is “Fear
Strikes Out,” starring Anthony
Perkins, Karl Malden, Norma
Moore, and Adam Williams.
Coming 'Sunday — Tuesday,
April 28-30, with a Sunday mat
inee at 3 and night shows at 8:15,
“The Vintage.”,
Pier Angeli, Mel Ferrer, John
Kerr and Michele Morgan are the
stars of the new M-G-M offering,
with other prominent roles play
ed by Leif Erickson and Theo
dore Bikel. “The Vintage” is a
beautiful thing to look at. It is
extraordinarily well photo-
graphed, and the music by David
Raksin is appropriate to the lux
uriant scene of the story, the Cin
ematography by Joseph Rutten-
berg is magnificent, and the
ways and means of harvesting
grapes and making wine are in
formatively and attractively re
vealed in the course of the story.
The pictere is fashioned to please
thoroughly the discerning type
of audience for which it is clearly
intended.
On Wednesday and Thursday
May 1-2, comes an attraction that
happily stands very high, under
the title of “The Young Stran
ger,” which is the simple story
of a 16-year-oid whose parents
fail to give him the cooperative
understanding every young per
son needs. Starring, and offering
a most auspicious entry into the
Hollywood performance sweep-
stakes, is James MacArthur, son
of Helen Hayes and the late
Charles MacArthur. The young
man presents here a brilliant por
trayal of the youngster whose
parents let hm down.
Lending very able support to
Mac Arthur’s lead are James Daly
as his father, a Hollywood pro
ducer; Kim Hunter as his mother.

Nunnally Johnson, who direct
ed such important films as “How
to Marry a Millionaire” and “The
Man in the Gray Flannel Suit,”
acted as producer, director and
writer for this sophisticated com
edy and gave it a handsomely
mounted production. He chose
for the shipboard scenes the lux
urious liner Liberte of the French
Line and transported his company
to New York to film the exterior
scenes. Later, the ship’s grand
salon and promenade deck were
re-created on the studio sound
stages for interior scenes.
The decor of the picture is
strictly in the modern styles, sug
gesting richness and charm. The
psychoanalyst’s office, the apart
ments of Miss Rogers and Mr.
Dailey and Miss Rush are the
epitome of all that is correct in
modem, living, including the in
evitable couch.
For the style-conscious ladies,
Charles LeMaire, multiple-Acad-
emy Award-winning stylist, per
sonally designed stunning ward
robes for Miss Rogers, Miss- Rush
and the other feminine players in
the film. The outfits give a
glimpse of what 1957’s high-fash
ion styling will be and include
everything the well-dressed wom
an needs for daytime and evening
wear.
More than 52,000 Americans
were injured in car-bicycle mis
haps in 1956.
