Du pree, West End, of the 500th Bombardment, at Langley AFB, was selected as a member of the Ninth Air Force’s composite air strike force now participating in “Exercise Carib-ex” in the Pan ama Canal Zone. Top Latin American officials from 21 nations will be among .spectators for the exercise, which began Monday. Through the ex ercise, Tactical Air Command will test its strength as a deter rent to global war through dem onstrations of mobility and flexi bility. Elements of the command to be utilized include tactical bombers, photo recon and troop carrier aircraft. Army Pvt. Garland D. Dowd, son of Mrs. Ethel Dowd, Carth age, is receiving basic training with the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga. Dowd was formerly employed by the Riley Paving Company. Two Southern Pines soldiers, Sgt. Paul H. Wallen and Sgt. Joseph W. Smith, recently par ticipated in a five-day field training exercise with the 11th Airborne Division’s 187th Infan try in Germany. WaUen, son of Mrs. Emma Wallen, 255 Morganton Rd., is a squad leader in the infantry’s Headquarters and Service Com pany. He entered the Army in July, 1954, and arrived in Eu rope in March, 1956. Wallen is a 1954 graduate of Southern Pines High School. Sergeant Smith, son of Mrs. J. A. Smith, Southern Pines, also is a squad leader in Headquar ters and Service Company. On Wednesday and Thursday May 1-2, comes an attraction that happily stands very high, under the title of “The Young Stran ger,” which is the simple story of a 16-year-oid whose parents fail to give him the cooperative understanding every young per son needs. Starring, and offering a most auspicious entry into the Hollywood performance sweep- stakes, is James MacArthur, son of Helen Hayes and the late Charles MacArthur. The young man presents here a brilliant por trayal of the youngster whose parents let hm down.
