Representative — Telei^ne Vase 2171 Commenoemeut Ckwumencement exercises at Vass-Lakeview High School will begin with the baccalaureate sermon in the school auditorium Sunday night, May 19, with the Rev. A. C. Trivette, pastor of the Vass Presbyterian Church, bring ing the message. There will be special music by the combined high school and elanentary glee clubs. This service and all other commencemient programs will be at 8 p. m. Wednesday, Class Day exer cises entitled “Carnival Capers” will be presented. , Graduation exercises will take place Thursday, with the presen tation of diplomas, medals and other awards. Five of the seniors will speak; Johnsye Cameron, salutatorian; Elise McWilliams, valedictorian; Jimmy Key, Joan Baldwin and Frances Johnson. Roger Gibbs, glee club director, wUl sing a solo and the glee club will also appear on the program. Senior mascots are Barbma Sawyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Sawyer, and Stewart McFayden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dougald McFayden. Elementary school graduation will take place Thtirsday morn ing. Around 35 or 40 eighth grade pupils of Mrs. P. A. Wilson and R. E. Beasley will receive certificates. There will be no guest speaker, but pupils wUl take part in the exercises. Commencement marshals, chosen from the Junior Class on the basis of scholarship, are; Polly Key, chief; Estelle McIn tosh, Mary Ruth Smith, D. A. McNeill, Jimmy Mashbum, and Reba Willard. Fish Fry The local Boy Scouts will sponsor a fish fry at the com- raimity house Saturlay from 5 to 8 p. m., and the public is invited to attend. These boys, under the leadership of Commander Karl Schweinfurth (ret.) are doing a fine work and previous events make it a sure thing that they will serve the supper in efficient manner. Don’t miss it! Piano Recital Mrs. Herbert D. Mclnnis pre sented her pupils in a delightful piano recital last Friday night that, was attended * by a large number of parents and friends. The program was well received, with many favorable comments. Each performer played from memory. The stage was attractively dec orated with standards of candles and large arrangements of deli cate pink laurel. Pupils pla3dng were; Mary Cameron, Barbara Ring, Betty Key, Anne Frye, Myma McRae, Diane Camerpn, Joan Flannigan, Diane Lassiter, Dolores Garcia, Jo Callahan, Mac McCrummen, Charles Cameron, Bonnie Calla han, Judy Bailey, Barbara Sea- groves, BEirbara Jessup, Leon Keith, Ila Ring, Jerry Gulledge. Also, Regina Cox, Sue Cam eron, Karen Wolfe, Patsy CJalla han, Dana Thomas, Kay Curtis, Jeannette MulUnix, Sandra East- wood, DEinny WUliams, Anne Crockett, Steve Frye, Judy Cam eron, Fairley Cameron, Bonnie Hicks, Anne Edwards, Linda Nicks, and Dorene Keith. One other pupil, Paul Ciunmings, was absent. Woman's Club Mrs. N. N. McLean and Mrs. P. A. Wilson were hostesses to the Vass Woman’s Club at its May meeting at the home of Mrs. McLean Friday night. Mrs. Leon Keith presided over the business session, during which routine re ports were given and several neyv items of business discussed. Mrs. Howard Gschwind, pro gram leader, presented State Highway Patrolman A. H. Hight of Carthage, who made an im pressive talk on “Highway Safe ty” and distributed safety liter ature. A question and answer period followed At the conclusion of the jh-o- gram. Mm. Keith turned the gavel over to Mrs. Charles Ray Pope, the new president, who spoke briefly. The retiring president thanked \ Melrose RARE support and cooperation, and she, in turn, was given a rising vote of thahks for her loyal ser vice during the past two years. Refreshments were served in the dining room from a table decorated in the May Day theme. A tall white candle rising from a bowl of pink roses served as a Maypole from which pastel col ored ribbons extended to the table, ready for miniature danc ers to appear and take over, party sandwiches, cookies and mints were served, with Mrs. McLean presiding at the punch bowL Mrs. Gilbert Gfaham of Char lotte, guest of Mrs. A V. Autry, the club women for their fine was welcomed as a visitor. Church Women Meet The general meeting of Vass Presbyterian Women of the Church was held at the church on Wednesday ni^t Of last week v/ith the president, Mrs. J. A. Hudson, presiding. Plans for an intensive Bible study to be held at the church on the fourth Sun day were made. The pastor, the Rev. A. C. Trivette, will conduct the study. Mrs. Herbert CaddeU was in charge of the program, which was highlighted a moving picture, “Opportunity Knocks Twice,” dealing wjth the birth day objectives, Korea and Mexi co. An offering for mission work in these coimtries was made. Mrs. Hudson read the Scripture lesson. Mrs. Caddell served birthday cake, nuts and drinks. A Daughter Mr. and Mrs. Robert Causey are the parents of a daughter, bom Friday, May 10, at Moore Coimty Hospital weighing seven pounds, 12 ounces. They have named her Rhonda Darlene. Mrs. Causey is the former Nellie Hart. WSCS Meets Mrs. W. A.
