Baccalaureate Service
“And who knoweth whether
thou art come to the kingdom for
such a time as this” from Esther
3:14 was the Scripture passage
on which the Rev. A. C. Trivette,
pastor of the Cameron, Vass and
Union Presbyterian Chimches,
based his message to the seniors
in the baccalaureate service
Sunday night which opened the
comimencement of Vass-Lake-
view High School.
The service began with Men
delssohn’s “War March of the
Priests” as a processional with
the seniors—the girls in white
caps and gowns, the boys in
blue, colors of Vass-Lakeview
School—marching in, led by the
capped and gowned mascots,
Barbara Sawyer and Stewart
McFayden.
Seated facing the congregation
were the 60 or more members of
the combined high school and
elementary glee clubs, whose
music was an outstanding feature
of the service. Mrs. W. E. Glad
stone was accompanist.
The stage was unusually at
tractive with several large bas
kets of red gladioli and white
feverfew.
The Rev. Thomas Wolfe, Bap
tist minister, gave the opening
invocation, followed by the sing
ing of the Doxology. The Rev.
James Eskridge of the Methodist-
Church read the Scripture lesson.
Iris Jackson, soloist, and the
glee clubs sang Handel’s “Lar
go,” and, alter the sermon, the
High School glee club sang
“Come to Me, All Ye That
Labor” by T. Roff, with Douglas
Johnson doing the solo part.
With Roger Gibbs as glee club
organizer and director the pupils
have made wonderful progress
since the club was started about
a month before Christmas, it was
noted.
Mr. Eskridge pronounced the
benediction and the glee clubs
sang “Now the Day Is Qver” as
a choral response, and Sullivan’s
“Onward, Christian Soldiers” as
a recessional.
Commencement marshals are:
Polly Key, chief; D. A. McNeill,
Reba Willard, Jimmy Mashburn,
Mary Ruth Smith, and Estelle
McIntosh. Marshals were chosen
from the Junior Class on the ba
sis of scholarship.
Supt. John McCrummen, who
welcomed the people to the serv
ice, announced as other com-
mericement events the Class Day
exercises Wednesday night and
Graduation exercises Thursday
night. May 22 and 23, at 8
o’clock.
