He recently received his LL.B. degree from the law school of the University of North Caro lina at Chapel Hill, and last week successfully passed the State Bar examination. Mr. Freissineti and his fiancee, Miss Elizabeth Studdert of Mid land, Tex., who is doing graduate study at UNC, spent last week end here with his mother, Mrs. Edward Gordon-Mann, and fam ily. Paul Jones Family Has House Guests F'rom Tennessee Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones and young son, Joe, have as guests at their home at 620 Valley Road Mr. and Mrs. William; Hooper and Miss Jane Hooper of Hum boldt, Tenn. Mrs. Hooper and daughter came by plane to Char lotte, where they were met by the Jones family, and after a few days in Southern Pines, the Joneses and their guests went to Myrtle Beach, S. C., to spend last week, returning Sxmday. Mr. Hooper drove here to join group Sunday night. VACATION SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT SET FOR SUNDAY, WIDE FELLOWSHIP CHURCH Commencement exercises for ' ' ' the Church of Wide Fellowship’s daily vacation Bible school will be held as a part of the 10 a. m. .service Sunday morning, and parents of the children are es pecially invited and urged to be present, according to Roger Gibbs, director of the school, which started on Monday of last week, and is continuing through tomorrow (Friday). Seventy-eight boys and girls from four years of age through 13 have been enrolled in the school, and their commencement will consist of songs, recitations, and handwork, the latter to be exhib ited as a part of the service, and in the educational building. Friday morning from 11:30 to noon, a ‘last day” picnic will be held in the fellowship hall, to which parents of the children are invited, also. Another bridesmaid. Miss Bar bara Proctor of Lincolnton, and Miss Harriss taught with the bride in the A. L. Brown High School at Kannapolis last year. 'They entertained for her at a luncheon at Chirburko’s in Kan napolis as a pre-nuptial courtesy. The bridegroom is in the teach ing profession, also. Misses Alberta And Blanche Monroe of West End Entertain Guests The family of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Monroe of West End held their annual get-together last weekend at, the Monroe home with Misses Alberta and Blanche Monroe. In the group were Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Monroe and fam ily, including their little grand daughter, Cherril Bryson, all of Charlotte, Dr. and Mrs. C. R. Monroe and daughters, Mary and Anne, of Pinehurst, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. Monroe of West End and their son John Lauchlin Mon roe, who is a rising senior at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Miss Mary Hebe Degler of Cleveland, Ohio, a former anes thetist at Moore Memorial Hospi tal who is now supervisor of anes thetists in a Cleveland hospital, also her niece, Mrs. Stanley Chid- dister and two sons, of Lancaster, Pa., left Saturday after spending a week with the Misses Monroe. Mrs. Tom West and Miss EUen Bruton of Chadboum visited the group on Tuesday, and Mrs. Vio let Yoimg, assistant superintend ent of nurses at Moore Memorial Hospital, was a dinner guest in the Monroe home Friday evening. Calling on Miss Blanche Mon roe Sunday were Mrs. Kenneth Foushee of Sanford, Miss Lillian Cole of Cameron, Mrs. Hawley Poole of West End, Mrs. Myrtle Fitzgerald, Mrs. Earl Bruton, Mrs. Elva Ewing and Miss Annie Campbell, of Candor, and Miss Luna Monroe of Southern Pines. Miss Blanche Monroe, while at tending the N. C. State Classroom Teachers’ meeting at the Blue Ridge assembly last spring, slip ped on a freshly waxed floor as she was leaving for home and suf fered a broken hip. She has been recuperating at home following a stay at Moore Memorial Hospital, and her friends will be interested to know that she is getting along so well that she expects to be ready to return to her classroom when school opens. She teaches in the primary department of the West End school. Jeffrey Lee Williams Has Birthday Party A 7 p.m. party Monday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Barrett Harriss marked the first birthday of their little grandson, Jeffrey Lee Williams, who with his moth er, Mrs. Raymond Williams (Mar tina Harriss) is here from Fay etteville on a visit. Sixteen chil dren were there to celebrate with Jeffrey Lee. The birthday cake was in the form of a circus tent and this was served with a special treat— homemade ice cream. Party hats and favors added to the fun, and pictures were made to record the event. Je:^rey’s father was here for the party, also, as were moth ers of the little guests. Mrs. James Ratliff Is Circle Hostess The Virginia Oliver Circle of the First Baptist Church met Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. James Ratliff. Mrs. Ray Huffman was enrolled as a new member and Mrs. Houser of Pennsylvania was a guest, bringing the attend ance to 11. Mrs. Ned Bushby conducted the devotions and Mrs. J. H. Caulfield led the program. Looking Ahead Church Circle Meets With Mrs. Mitchell Mrs. W. M. Mitchell of Midland Road was hostess to Presbyterian Circle 10 'Tuesday morning, with nine members attending. Miss Effie Bailey conducted the Bible study and Mrs. Mitchell led the “Let’s Talk About . . .” discussion from Presbyterian Women. CHURCH WOMEN The monthly meeting of Brownson Memorial Presbyteri an Women of the Church will be held at 8 p. m. Monday in the church sanctuary, with Mrs. J. W. Causey, chairman of church extension, in charge of the pro gram. A film, “The Church In Thy House,” will be shown, and MisS Elaine Berrong, Brownson Mem orial’s educational director, will report on Camp Monroe activi ties. Miss Berrong served as a counselor there for a while dur ing the summer, and a number of boys and girls from this church have attended the camp. BAPTIST MEETING The Women’s Missionary Socie ty of the First Baptist Church will meet at 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, at the church. Miss Vonnie Mae Frye And Cranford Allred Are Wed At Vass In a private ceremony at the Methodist parsonage in Vass at 8 p.m. Saturday, August 10, Miss Vonnie Mae Frye, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Frye, became the bride of Cranford Allred, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Allred of -Aberdeen. The Rev. T. Fant Steele, Jr., of ficiated at the double ring cere mony, which was perfonhed in the presence of the bridegroom’s brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Black of Pinehurst, Eind Mrs. Steele. The bride was wearing a pea cock blue dress with white acces sories and a corsage of pink car nations. Mrs. Allred is a 1957 graduate of Vass-Lakeview High School and is employed by the Aberdeen Hosiery Mill in Aberdeen. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Freeman left Sunday for their home in New York after visiting her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. James Douglas. Jeffrey Freeman, who had been with his grandparents for the summer, returned home with hem. Mr. and Mrs.' W. H. Melanie Montesanti Has Birthday Party Melanie M. Montesanti, three- year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dante Montesanti, was hon ored at a birthday pau^ty at her home at 345 Country Club Road from 3 to 4 p. m. Tuesday. 'The tots had a good time playing in doors, and watching as Melanie opened the many gifts she re ceived. Mrs. Jones Reports On Convention Of BPO Does Drove 42, Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does, met in regular session last week- and heard an interesting report on the Na tional Convention held at Idaho J ails, Idaho, given by their pres ident, Alma Jones, who was the official delegate. She gave the total attendance as 438 and next year’s convention city as Albu querque, N. Mex. The new Supreme President, Lillian Tomilson of Ogden, Utah, is to visit here next spring when Southern Pines is hostess to the State meeting. Melba Bushby reported that the Sanatorium committee had visited the children at McCain Sanatorium, taking gifts, toilet ries and clothing. 'The Fall Festival to be held in September was brought to the attention of members by the chairman, Louise Johnson, and the discussion brought out the fact that members are already engaged in plaiming their pro jects. After wards, at a reception featuring songs from the MRA internation al chorus, guests from Japan, England, Germany, India, Africa, New Zealand, Hollywood, Scan dinavia, and a refugee who took part in the Hungarian revolu tion, delivered some of the many messages received from all over the world. Secretary of the In terior, Oscar Chapman, were among those who sent telegrams. fFoillowing the graduation of Mrs. Becker from the Rocking- hapi High School in ,J951, she gave her full time to the work of Moral Re-Armament in this country and in Europe and Asia. She has sung with the interna tional chorus of MRA and has taken key parts in several ideo logical plays. In 1955 she travel ed through Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe with the world statesmen’s mission at the invitation of the heads of state and leaders of government. Mr. Becker was educated at the well-known British school. Charterhouse. He is an accom plished musician and actor. Like Mrs. Becker, he has traveled ex tensively with the force of Moral Re-Armament in Asia, Europe and America and has spent biuch lime working in many of the key cities of Africa. Following their wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Becker will return to Mackinac Island to rejoin the MRA Assembly of Nations. Mrs, W. H. Thomley and Mrs. Mattie H. Currie, of CHiarleston, S. C., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Blue and Mrs. Jean Edsoru and Mrs. Charles B. Deane of Rockingham, became the bride of Thomas John Frederick Becker of London, England on Tuesday, August 6. He is the son of Mrs. John Guise and the late George Becker. The ceremony uniting this couple followed immediately the marriage of Mr. Becker’s sister Jane to Herbert Allen of Seattle, Wash., in a double wedding cere mony. Over 1,000 people from 43 dif ferent countries attending the Moral Re-Armament Assembly of Nations were present at thq service, which took place in the Great Hall of the Assembly Cen ter, Mackinac Island, Mich. 'The marriage was performed by the Rt. Rev. George West, formerly Bishop of Rangoon, Burma. Special Guests Among the chief guests were Dr. Frank N. D. Buchman, initi ator of Moral Re-Armament; General Ho Ying-chin, chairman of the Military Strategy Advis ory Board of Formosa and former Prime Minister of China; Major General Hayaddin, Pakistan Mil itary Attache in Washington; six members of the British House of Commons; Prince Castelbarco of Italy, and Senator Shidzue Kato, member of the Upper House in the Japanese Diet. H. W. “'‘Sunny” Austin, former British Davis Cup tennis star, gave the address. He spoke of the far-reaching effectiveness of the lives of both the bride and Mr. Becker in many nations and iround the world in bringing an .“jnswer to Communism and in creating unity at a time when division was on the increase. Their marriage, he said, because it was based on absolute moral standards would unite not only two people from different nations but would give hope and faith to many. Mr. Deane gave his daughter in marriage. She wore a long- sleeved gown of white peau de soie. The skirt was straight in front and gathered into a bustle at the back from which two pan els fell forming a train. She wore a crown of orange blossoms v/luch held a ballerina-length veil in place. A spray of garden ias, white carnations, and pink roses made up her bouquet. Mrs. Blanton Belk of Summit, N. J., and Richmond, Va., was matron of honor. The bridesmaids v/ere Mrs. John Hallward, Mon treal, Canada, and Miss Anne Twitchell, New York City. They wore floor-length dresses of lilac- colored organdy over taffeta. The other I,bridesmaids were Mrs. Anne Howard, London, England, who wore a Greek national cos tume belonging to her mother’s family; Miss Jon van Os, The Hague, who wore a Dutch cos tume; and Miss Madi Hegetsch- weiler of St. Gallen, Switzerland, who wore her national costume. The bridesmaids carried baskets of mauve and pink zinnias, phlox, asters, and baby’s breath. 'The bride’s mother wore a gown of aqua lace over taffeta. James, London, England; Saami Contractor, Bom- Mrs. C. R. Mills Plays For Wedding of Niece At Chapel Hill Mrs. C. R. Mills went to Chap el Hill last Friday and pltyed for the wedding of her niece. Miss Jane Kelly, and Dr. Thad Mon roe, which took place in the Baptist Church there at 5 p. m. Saturday. She returned home Sunday. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. HoUie Olive Kelly of Apex, and Dr. Monroe is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Thad- deus Monroe of Fayetteville. They will make their home in Raleigh. The bride is a graduate of the University of North Carolina with a B.S. degree in nursing. She was formerly employed as a staff nurse in the operating room at N. C. Memorial Hospital, ^Chapel Hill, and will be employeerin Ral eigh as an instructor with the De partment of Nursing Education at State Hospital. Dr. Monroe is a graduate of Da vidson College and the University of North Carolina School of Medi cine. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary fraternity. Beta Theta Pi social fraternity. Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical fraternity, and Phi Chi. He in terned at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and is now a resident on the psychiatry staff at N. C. Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Henry Jones Is Honored At Farewell Parties Honoring Mrs. Henry Jones, who with her children, Henry, Jr., Jane and Susan, will leave Mon day to join Captain Jones ki France, Mrs. Irie Leonard, Mrs. Charles Cole, and Mrs. Joe Mar- ley entertained around 25 guests at a Coke party at Mrs. Marley’s Friday morning. Sandwiches, cheese biscuits, cookies and Coke were served and informal conversation was enjoyed. Mrs. Jones was complimented again on Monday afternoon when Mrs. ’Victor Sheppard gave a tea for 15 guests. Dr. Vida McLeod, Injured In Fall, Is Hospital Patient Dr. Vida McLeod of 265 North Ridge Street, is playing the role of patient at Moore Memorial Hospital, and reports of her prog ress indicater>that she can be a wonderful patient, as well as a wonderful doctor. Shortly after 2 p. m. Tuesday, Dr. McLeod fell when a rug skid ded on a waxed floor in her home. She returned to her office for the afternoon hours, but that evening suffered intense pain A doctor wa? called, and- she was sent by ambulance to the hospi tal, where an examination re vealed a broken left hip. Siu-gery v/as performed the following morning, and-xthe doctor-patient is getting along nicely. Dr. McLeod’s children, Alex, a Duke medical student who is doing research work this sum mer, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert McLeod of Charleston, S. C., vis ited her as soon as they learned of the accident, and they will re turn this weekend for another visit. Preston Matthews Is Here From Alaska Preston Matthews of the An chorage Daily News, Anchorage, Alaska, arrived Tuesday to visit his mother, Mrs. 'W. D. Matthews. He is the Alaskan delegate to the International 'Typographical Union convention to be held in New York City August 17-20. He will go to New York Friday, and will return to Southern Pines the middle of next week to spend a few days more before going back to Alaska. Officers Club Of Eastern Star Has Outdoor Supper 'The Past Matrons and Past Pa trons Club, Eastern Star, met Monday evening with Mrs. Ed win Causey at the Forrest-Caus ey lake cottage near Lakeview. Mrs. M. G. McRae was co-host ess. A short business session was held, and an outdoor hamburger and hot dog supper was enjoyed complete with baked beans, toss ed salad and tea. After a singing and “gab ses sion,” homemade ice cream was served. And Mrs. Devins Take Trips In Italy Mrs. Edward Gordon-Mann has received news, from her daughter that she and her husband, 1st Lt. J. Herbert Devins, Jr., are visit ing in Puccini Coiano, near Siena, to attend the Palio of Siena. They will visit other friends and rela tives at Forte dei Marmi, near Florence, also Wide Fellowship Church School Picnic Set For Wednesday The aimual chxu'ch school pic nic of the Church Of Wide Fel lowship will be held at Pinebluff Lake next Wednesday. Sand- v/iches are to be carried by those who attend. Beverage and ex tras will be furnished by the church school. Cars will meet at the church at 3:30 p. m. for those who wish to go to the lake for swimming, and it is hoped that many will go at this time. Supper will be at 6 o’clock. All members of the church and church school are invited to attend. Duplicate Club Lists Winners Mrs. James Besley and Boy Grinnell were winners in the Sandhills Duplicate Bridge Club’s play Tuesday night. In second place were Mrs. B. W. Dickinson and Mrs. L. Fetner of Hamlet, and in third, Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Hall of Fayetteville. PIERRE T. SPENCER, JR. Mr. and Mrs. Pierre T. Spen cer, of 565 East Indiana Avenue, are the parents of a son, Pierre T., Jr., bom ’Thursday, August 8, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. They have three daughters, Lee, 10 years of age, Lynn, nine, and Deana, a year and a half. The Spencers have resided in Southern Pines two years. He was in the service when they moved here.
