The “drys” carried the election by a narrow 225-vote margin. The election, Hvhich attracted the largest turnout of voters in the history of Lee County elec tions of any type, also saw prop ositions for legalizing the sale of beer and wine losing. Sanford, county seat, voted wet. There was some speculation in Sanford over the weekend that a special election might be sought to legalize ABC stores in Sanford only. Such an election could only be held after securing special legislation in the N. C. General Assembly. Nearest ABC stores to Sanford are Pinehurst and Southern Pines. Governor Hodges had appoint ed the State study committee.' One of its principal recommen dations was that Home Demon stration programs be de-empha- sked. It suggested, instead, that “income generating work among the fgrm people of North Caro lina is of prime importance and should assume the larger portion of Extension personnel and funds. “On the contrary,” Mrs. Wil liams said, “we submit that since it is the role of. the woman in most rural homes to translate this income into the greatest possible degree of good living for the farm family, the role is becoming increasingly important and every possible assistance is needed.” The commissioners unanimous ly agreed to go along with the Council’s recommendations and forwarded a copy of their action to State officials and the Study Committee.
