C., is celebrating the colleges semicentennial year and its own 48th season with extra big rolls of 35 newcomere and 27 holdovers. Additions announced by Di rector Robert E. Fort, Jr., give the 62-member girls’ chorus an intersectional character this year. Besides both Carolinas, the new comers hail from Georgia, Indi ana, Kentucky, Virginia and the District of Columbia. New members include Sopho more Jacqueline Davenport of Southern Pines. Coker’s Glee Club is open to all women students, who receive college credit for membership in good standing. The chorus will make its- 1957-58 public debut Dece-mber 15 in a semiannual campus concert of Christmas mu sic. A picked group of about 35 members makes a Carolina con cert tour each spring. MRS. GOBY TO BE GUEST' SPEAKER AT MEETING OF DAR CHAPTER SATURDAY Mr. and Mrs. Lamb Attend Dinner Party In Raleigh Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Robert V. Lamb, Jr., attended a cocktail party and dinner given by her parents, Mf. and Mrs. Joseph H. Hardison, at the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh Saturday evening. Mrs. Lamb’s brother. Dr. Joe Hardi son, Jr., of the Cornell Medical Center, New York City, and her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Hoch of Golds- •boro were present. Other guests were from Raleigh, Wadesboro and Chapel Hill. Miss Lockie Parker Will Speak To St. Joseph’s Guild Miss Lockie Parker, owner of The Country Bookshop, will be guest speaker at the meeting of the Guild of St.-Joseph-of-ther Pines Hospital to be held at the hospital next Tuesday, the 12th. at 2:15 p. m. Miss Parker is a well known bibliophile and her address is expected to be of much interest. The public is cordially invited to attend this meeting. Margaret Ann Ligon Seven Years Old, Is Feted At Parties Margaret Ann Ligon, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Cheves K. Ligon, celebrated her seventh birthday with a party Thursday afternoon, October 31, in the basement of the Presbyterian Church. Her young guests were Carl S.arvis, George Chappell, Jean Irwin, Nancy Phillips, Bobby and Jimmy Neal, Freddy Hollister, Tommy Lyons, Lindy Wiebb, Al lan Gibbs, Randy Warren, and her brother, Frank Ligon. Halloween decorations set the theme for games, which were led by Miss Elaine Berrong, and there were Halloween favors for all. Decorated cup cakes, ice cream and Pepsicola were serv ed. , Margaret Ann’s grandmother, aunt and cousin, Mrs. J. O. Tay lor, Miss Jean Carol Taylor and Jimmy Taylor, came up from Lancaster, S. C., for the day Sat- lurday,. and another celebration of her birthday and her parents’ wedding anniversary was held, with gifts, a special dinner, and an extra good time for all. Church of Wide Fellowship Meetings Are Announced The monthly Church Night din ner of the Church of Wide Fel lowship will be held in the fel lowship hall next Wednesday at 6:30 o’clock, with the Friendship Circle as hostess group. . Members of the Friendsnip Circle voted to cancel their No vember meeting and include the November program with the ac tivities of their December meet ing. The Lena Sweezy Circle will meet in the church parlor at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, November 14. The Margaret White Circle will meet at the church at 3 p.m. Thursday, the 14th. Mrs. Isaac Woodell will conduct the devo tional program for the Bible study. The Morning Circle will meet at 10 o’clock next Tuesday with Mrs. R. M. Cushman at her home at 190 North VaRey Road. Presbyterian Circle 1 Holds Dinner Meeting Circle 1 of Brownson Memori al Presbyterian Women of the Church met at 1 p. m. Tuesday, with 20 members and guests sit ting down to a bountiful dinner in the classroom of the Ladies’ Bible Class. Guests included Dr. and Mrs. Cheves K. Ligon, Mrs. Howard N. Butler, Mis Elaine Berrong, Mrs. Arthur W McNeill and Mar tha McLean. Mrs. C C. McLean, Circle chairman, presided over the business meeting which foUowed. Mrs. John F. St. Anne’s Guild Plans For Christmas, Honors Rector’s Wife St. Anne’s Guild of the Wom en’s Society of Emmanuel Church met Monday night at the parish house with the president, Mrs. N. L. Hodgkins, conducting the\ bus iness session. Most of the discussion dealt with plans for sending Christmas gifts to Thompson Orphanage in Charlotte and- to the church’s mis sionaries. Mrs. Katherine McCoR led a discussion of current church top ics. Mrs. Martin Caldwell, wife of the rector, was surprised with a gift from the Guild—a play pen for her daughter, Jennifer, who was born the fifth of last month. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Hoke PoRock and Mrs. Har ry Vale, who served party sand wiches, cookies and punch. About 30 members attended. Two Are Feted At Party Given By CP&L Division Office Personnel Personnel of the division of fice of Carolina Power and Light Company gave a fareweR and welcoming party at the division office on Highway 1 South last Friday night, honoring Roy I. Council, division personnel offi cer who has been transferred from Southern Pines to Raleig’a., and R. A. Tucker, Jr, his succes sor here. A barbecue supper, served buffet style, was enjoyed, with an evening of dancing and conversation following. Mr. Coun cil was presented a gift from the group. P. ^Morrison, Elwood Blake, and Charles Wicker. Miss Polly Miller Gives Dinner Party At The Southland Miss PoRy Miller entertained at a dinner party for 17 at The Southland Hotel at noon Sunday. Twelve of her guests were from Statesville. Floral decorations arranged by Mrs. Harrington, the hotel own er who grows many beautifiR flowers, were enthustically admired. The dinner table cen terpiece was of mums in shades of yeRow. On the buffet table a lazy susan held fruits and nan- dina berries in pleasing combin ation, and a silver bowl of roses flanked by candles added to the festive scene. Miss MiRer is a member of the local high school faculty. OPEN HOUSE Invitations have been is sued to the Aberdeen School Auditorium Open House, from 3:30 to 4:30 Sunday af ternoon, November- 10. The Aberdeen High School Glee Club, the county’s highest rated glee club, will sing from 4 to 4:15 o’clock. There has been much inter est in Aberdeen’s fine new auditorium, and many people are expected to take advan tage of this opportunity to see it. Three Baptist Circles Hold Tuesday Meetings Three Circles of the Women’s Missionary Society of the First Baptist Church held their' monthly meetings Tuesday. Mrs. P. G. McRee was hostess to Circle 1 at her home on North May Street at 8 p. m., with 14 members attending. Mrs. McRee led the devotions and the pro-i gram. , Circle 2 met at the same hour with Mrs. Jack Davenport with an attendance of 14, which inclu ded one. guest, Mrs Maynard Mangum. Mrs. Calvin HoweR was assisted in presenting the pro gram by Mrs. Eugene Fields and Mrs. Harold Bachman. Mrs. How ard Allred led the devotions. Circle 4 held an afternoon meeting at the home of Mrs. W. E. Kivette with 14 members present, one of whom, Mrs. Philip Green, is a new one. There were two visitors, Mrs. Lottie Pollard of Halifax, Va., who is visiting Mrs. R. A. Chaney at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. John son, and a guest of Mrs. J. J. Hafler of Pinehurst. Mrs. C. B. Gale led the program. Mrs. Bennett And Mrs. Grinnell Are "Winners At Bridge Mrs. James N. Bennett of Port ’Chester, N Y., and Mrs. Roy Grinnell were prize winners when scores were tallied 'Tues day night at the regular meeting of the SandhiRs DupRcate Bridge Club. The meeting was held at the Southern Pines Coun try Club, with four tables at play. Mrs. James Besley and Mrs. C. D. May placed second, and Mrs. Roy Simmons and Mrs. Jean Ed- son, third. Looking Ahead CIVIC CLUB The Civic Club starts a new season with a meeting next Mon day, the 11th, at 3 p.m. Miss Lil ia Lee Annis will give a talk on “Hawaii,” where she lived for several years. All are welcome to attend. Tea wiR be served. ST. JOSEPH’S GUILD St. Joseph’s Hospital Guild wiR meet at the hospital at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, with Miss Lockie Parker as guest speaker. ANTHONY’S CHARITY BALL WILL BE BIG SOCIAL EVENT; COMMITTEES NAMED St. Anthony’s Charity BaR, to be held at the Southern Pines Armory Tuesday night, December 3, will inaugurate the Christmas social season in the SandhiRs. Plans for the baR were revealed in detail at the monthly meeting of the Woman’s Club of St. An thony’s Catholic church, held in the auditorium of St. Anthony’s School Monday night. Mrs. Marie Smithson, president of the club, wUl serve as general chairman. Mrs. Sarah Owens of Pinehurst is honorary chairman. One thousand invitations wiR be ready for maiRng next week. Dean Hudson and his orchestra wiR provide music, and conces sions will be handled by the Na tional Guard. I'ifty members were present at the meeting, at which Voit Gil more, former mayor of Southern Pines and president of the North CaroRna Travel Council, spoke on progress of the “Anti-Litterbug Campaign” now being sponsored by the Council. He urged cooperation with the cEimpaign, and went on to de scribe brightening prospects for the development of industry and tourism in the State and the SandhiRs, with many ways in which the individual citizen can help. Following the meeting, cof fee and cakes were served. MOORE HOSPITAL AUXILIARY STARTS SEASON WITH ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING The Moore Memorial Hospital Auxiliab’ held its first meeting of the fall season Tuesday morning at the Nurses’ Home, with a large and enthusiastic group in attend ance. The new president, Mrs. Robert M. McMiRan, presided. Mrs. McMiRan appointed Mrs^ Alwyn FoRey of Southern Pines as chairman of the Christmas par ty for hospital patients and staff —an annual event which brings much joy to aR concerned. The president also named Mrs. Stuart H. Patterson of Pinehurst as Pro jects chairman. The chief project planned for the immediate future is the decorating of the playroom in the pediatric wing, for use of convalescing children. The president emphasized the need of volunteer workers in the c&nteen at night, and reminded that volunteers are always needed in the surgical supply room. Mrs. ARce Stallings, director of nurses at the hospital, was guest speaker. She commended the group for the work they are do ing for the hospital, and asked for their continued support. She pointed up the fact that the hos pital is no longer in its infancy, but that it has grown up, and with its recent expansion now has a bigger job to do than in the past; that it must gear itself to the big ger job, which makes the aid of volunteer workers of even great er importance in keeping the place working smoothly. In and Out of Town Mrs. Marvin Wicker is leaving Sunday morning for Philadel phia where she will represent Southern Pines at the National Girl Scout meeting. She and some representatives from San ford wiR drive up together. Mrs. Eunice Hite of Ft. Mill, S. C., spent the weekend in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Douglas on Ft. Bragg Road. Dr. and Mrs. David Whitehead of FayettevRle visited the Douglass es Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cole, Al wyn FoRey and Miss LurRne Wil lis attend^ the funeral of J. M. Mrs. Floyd had been here with her son, Pete Floyd, who is district salesman for A.&M. Kar- agheusian, Inc. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Mills here last weekend to visit their mother, Mrs. Ralph Mills, who is a patient at Moore Memorial Hospital, were Capt. Risden T. Bennett of RoRo, Mo., Joseph H. Bennett and family of Colonial Heights, Va., Mrs. J. Miles Hedgepeth of Hampton, Va., and Mrs. Keith E. Harding of Van Nuys, Calif. Maj. and Mrs. W. W. Storm and their four children of Quantico, Va., are arriving Friday to be guests of Dr. Vida McLeod until Monday. Dr. McLeod plans to re turn to her office Tuesday, after being out for some time because of an injury sustained in a fall. She has been visiting in Charles ton, S. C., and Sanford, Fla., re cently. Mr. and Mrs. D. Wade Stevick went to KemnapoRs Sunday and brought her mother, Mrs. H. P. Bilyeu, home with them for a visit. Mrs. Bilyeu will visit her sister, Mrs. Mollie Burgess, also, while here. Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Lowndes, en route from Camden, S. C., to their home in Wilming ton, Del., spent from Thursday until Saturday visiting Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Ewing and family of 220 North VaRey Road. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jones left today for Johnstown, Pa., to take his mother, Mrs. F. A. Jones, home after a visit of nearly three weeks. Johnny Mays of JacksonviRe, Fla., service engineer with Pros perity Company, spent Sunday- night with Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jones. Mrs. Lawrence Andrews re turned to her home in Sonyea, N. Y., last Saturday after spend ing two weeks with her daughter, Mrs. Herbert Caples. Capt. L. A. Des Pland, with some officers from Fort Bragg, went to Myrtle Beach last week end on a fishing trip. They re ported a good catch of whiting. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chatfield and James Prim attended the State-Wake Forest garhe in Ral eigh Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Grinnell, Duke University students, and their guests for two months, her brother Arturo Soto, and a cousin, both of Guatemala ciity, spent last weekend with Mr. GrinneR’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy GrinneR. Mrs. R. S. DuRant visited her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert DuRant, in Asheboro during part of last week, and spent one night with relatives at Davidson, her former home. She returned to Southern Pines Fri day. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas CampbeR and Miss Ginger WoodeR were here from Raleigh for a weekend visit to the girls’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac A. Woodell. Tommy is in the school of industrial arts at State College, and Patti is working in the research depart ment there and attending a class in research chemistry and another which deals with how to protect one’s self from radio activity. Ginger is’ employed at Virginia Crabtree’s dress shop in Cameron Village, and likes her work very much. She and two other young women have an apartment at 224 East Park Drive, Raleigh. The CaippbeRs live at 1324 Canter bury Road. Mrs. Edna L. PriRaman return ed recently from Ocean Drive, S. C., where she enjoyed a month at the beach. Prior to that she spent two months this summer visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David PriRaman, and their three children in Excelsior, Minn., making the trip both ways by plane. 'The trip to Minnesota was her first flight and she en joyed it very much. I tl - PATTY CREATH, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Creath of Pinehurst, has been award- .ed the Pinehurst “Good Citi zen” annual award made by the Alfred Moore Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, for her “depend ability, service, patriotism and leadership.” Carol Staples was the win ner in Southern Pines, and both girls will go to Raleigh December 7 for a tour of his torical spots as guests of the DAR, and will be among win ners in other sections of the State eligible to receive a DAR scholarship. Eells-McConnell Engagement Announced Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Howard McConnell of BrOtnxville, New York, and Brevard have announc ed the engagement of their daughter. Miss Elizabeth How ard McConnell, to Samuel EeRs, Jr., son of Mr. and I^rs. Eells of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Edgar- town, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. The bride-elect is a niece of John D. McConnell of Southern Pines and a granddaughter of the late Dr. Joseph Moore McC'onneR, dean of Davidson College. The wedding date has not been an nounced. Methodist Circle 3 Meets; Mrs. Hubbard Is Program Leader Circle 3 of the Methodist Wom an’s Society of Christian Service met 'Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. R. L. Bame, with Mrs. Luth er H. Lewis and Mrs. Tom Sur ratt as hostesses. Mrs. Mary Clark, vice-chairman, presided in the absence of the chairman.
